My dog has parvo, distemper, and liver issues. Can she survive this?

Those puppies are cute! Unfortunately it is possible for both parvovirus and distemper to infect a puppy at the same time. This is especially more likely if they are in a shelter situation where diseases can be more easily spread. Parvo weakens the immune system leaving the puppy prone to other infections so if exposed to distemper the puppy would likely get sick from it. Both diseases (especially parvo) carry a guarded prognosis. They both generally require intensive medical care and if survived the puppy can end up with life long issues related to the infections. I'm sorry to hear these puppies may be effected. My hope is that if caught early they may have a better chance of survival but will likely require a lot of medical care. But yes, you do increase survival with quick veterinary action and appropriate treatment. The parvo vaccine at this time is not recommended because you suspect she may already be infected with parvovirus. The same applies to people, if a person has the flu already it is not advised to give them the flu vaccine. She will most likely not be okay with just hydration because parvovirus requires a multiple treatment for the best chance at survival. It is best to take her to your vet for proper medical treatment for parvovirus, which can be treated at home with medication given to you by the vet if you cannot hospitalize her (which is the optimal treatment). I have been successful in saving parvo infected pets with having the owner return daily for injectable antibiotics, anti-nausea medications, subcutaneous fluids and Vitamin B injections. I am so sorry that Soju isn't doing well, and I sincerely apologize that we did not get to your question sooner. I suspect that Soju has turned a corner for better or worse by now, but based on the blood test results you posted and on the information you gave, I am very concerned that he was sick enough that he wasn't likely to survive. We don't often see infectious hepatitis in the US because it's widely vaccinated for, and in in 15 years of practice I have not seen a case. I also cannot find a survival rate to pass on to you, though when they are as sick as Soju, based on the blood work and his very young age I suspect he's got less than a 25% chance of survival. Having said that, if he has made it through the past couple of days and if he is showing some improvement, by all means continue treating him, as he may be one of the lucky ones. She will need to be on IV fluids, injectable antibiotics, and anti-nausea medication. Your veterinarian is right that she needs to eat. If the medication can control her vomiting, this will help her to keep food down. There is no way to know for sure if she will survive, but it sounds like you are providing her the care she needs. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Hepatitis (infection and inflammation of liver) is a very serious condition and is very hard to treat. If there is an internal medicine specialist in the area I would recommend having Nala seen by them. Otherwise I would be talking with your vet about testing for infectious diseases. However, it looks like they have treated her with broad spectrum antibiotics as well as IV fluids. I would recommend continuing treatment. She may need a feeding tube placed to try to keep her protein up during this illness. Unfortunately, with how severe this is, she may or may not pull through it, but the best chance of her making it through is to be aggressive with her treatment. I would suggest continuing to monitor her liver and white cell count, and to have imaging done and possible samples of her liver to try to determine the cause of the infection. Otherwise I would be talking to your vet about the parasites and infections present in your area and get covered with certain antibiotics. The white cells have increased however not that much, and the liver enzymes are actually improving if I can read the dates right from your picture. This is very hopeful. I would continue with antibiotics (IV if you cannot get them in orally), as well as IV fluids and I would think about syringe feeding or placing a feeding tube. Certainly with values as elevated as these are I am concerned about the kidney impairment due to this infection. Her protein is now on the decline as well which indicates further that her kidneys are now leading to a protein loss. Winter really needs to be hospitalized on continuous 24 hour IV fluids to hep reduce these levels and continue the antibiotic IV therapy until she responds as well as anti-vomiting medications to keep her comfortable. This infection does not respond right away in every case but it is very important that she receive adequate IV fluid therapy and antibiotics. I hope Winter gets better soon. I'm sorry Kiku has distemper. Supportive care is the only treatment available for this disease, which can include IV fluids, anti-seizure medications, and medications to help control vomiting and diarrhea. Unfortunately about 80% of puppies who get distemper will die from the disease. His best chance for survival is hospitalization with a vet, so I would take him into one immediately.
