Why won't my dog's surgical incision heal after stitches and staples?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Is there a reason why my 2 year old dogs incision won't heal? It split open with the dissolvable stitches due to a reaction on day 7 post op so she had staples put in. However the top staple has now ripped through on side so it's not holding it together anymore (day 15). It's also struggling to heal at the bottom. What is the cause of this do you think? She's on clavaseptin but still has a cloudy liquid coming out. Were seeing an advanced practitioner tomorrow. She is wearing a surgical suit

The most likely reason for the dehiscence of the incision is infection. The infection may be due to a resistant type of bacteria (like MRSA). I suggest you have the wound cultured so they can find out what bacteria is growing there.
