My dog's surgery incision reopened. Can it heal on its own?

If you can a) keep her from licking the wound, ie put an e-collar on her and b) keep her quiet in a crate, for example, then you can wait until your appointment tomorrow. If she cannot be kept quiet until then, you should take her to emergency for stapling, gluing or resuturing

Mast cell tumor incision sites often dehisce (come open) because of the nature of this type of tumor. Staples are not likely to hold either. Without seeing it myself it is hard to say what treatment would be best. You may have to let it heal by second intention (let it fill in and heal naturally). I suggest you speak to your vet about starting Skippy on some antihistamines which may help with the dehiscence of the incision.

Since there is a hole in Jaxx's incision it will probably need to be stitched closed again so it heals properly and decreases the chance of infection. If you have an E-collar at home I would keep that on him to prevent him from licking the incision more and preventing more trauma. Also, depending where the incision is you could place a light bandage over it to prevent him from licking. Just be sure not to put too much pressure on the incision with the bandage because that could do more harm than good. Definitely keep you appointment at the vet tomorrow so they can check him out.

If the incision is still closed, I'd just keep an eye on it, checking it two to three times a days. Should the incision open, then I would worry and have him seen by a vet right away to get it closed again. I hope this helps.

I would not touch it. Make sure she has an Elizabethan collar on so she doesn’t bite at it. I would call your vet in the morning to have them evaluate the incision to make sure it is completely closed. They may just have you keep the collar on for another 5 days. No, unfortunately there is no ointment that will keep the incision closed. Ideally, she should be rechecked by your veterinarian. The most common reasons for sutures to fail are too much activity and licking the incision. If an e-collar (cone) is not in place, put one on her immediately and keep it on until she is healed. Restrict her activity as well. Keep her crated, if necessary, to prevent running, jumping or rough play. Leash walk her when she has to go out.
