My Golden Retriever suddenly pees inside. Could it be a health issue?

Sudden changes in behavior can sometimes signal a health issue, and accidents in an elderly dog can be caused by a number of things. Bladder infections can cause sudden accidents in the house, while changes to the muscles and nerves around the bladder may lead to incontinence-type accidents with dribbling or small puddles happening. Cognitive changes in elderly dogs (similar to human dementia) can also sometimes cause a pet to "forget" their training such as potty training, leading to accidents. It is a good idea to schedule a veterinary exam to see if any of these could be a possible cause and to find a treatment plan that helps.

At her age there are several things it can be. Your vet can collect a urine sample to check for a urinary tract infection. They can always draw some blood to check her kidneys and blood sugar and for Cushings disease. All these can cause an increase in drinking and urination which will lead to accidents. If all of that is normal, than she may be getting incontinent and they have medication for that also!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Puppies do urinate more frequently than adults. If this is a change in urination than it is not normal. If she is having small frequent accidents in the house and going frequently outside with straining and small amount that is not normal. If it is larger amounts in the house if could be a lapse in house training. If the above applies of increased frequency, urgency and straining Gracy may have a UTI. I recommend having her seen by your Vet and bringing a urine sample to have it checked for bacteria. We treat UTIs with antibiotics. I hope this helps and I wish Gracy a speedy recovery!

I would recommend seeing your veterinarian first to rule out a urinary tract infection or other lower urinary disease like bladder stones. Even though you’re not seeing blood these wouodnbe common causes of sudden inappropriate urination and its important to rule out a medical condition first. If Pog’s urine and other testing is normal you can discuss restarting house training with your vet.

Poor Riley (and you!)! Riley could be urinating in the house because of a medical issue, such as a urinary tract infection, crystals in the urine or bladder stones. Behavioral stressors, such as a change in her normal routine, can trigger inappropriate urination in some pets. As a first step, Riley should be seen by her vet and have a urinalysis performed to check for the presence of infection and crystals. A urinary tract infection requires antibiotics and crystals may require a diet change. If medical issues are ruled out, consider using a calming pheromone diffuser or collar (Adaptil is one example).

I would make sure that Simba does not have a medical issue like a urinary tract infection, bladder stones or cystitis. I recommend taking him to your vet for a urine test. If the urine sample is normal than it is likely he has a behavioral issue. I would recommend picking up the water before bedtime to help prevent urination overnight. Also you could start to crate train him too.

Poor Ciara! Straining to urinate and only dribbling small amounts of urine occurs most frequently as a result of a urinary tract infection. Other possible causes include bladder stones or crystals in the urine. Ciara should be examined by her vet and will need to have a urinalysis performed.
