Why did my 4-year-old Staffy suddenly start escaping our home?

How frustrating for you! I'm afraid it's hard to say why he might be doing this without more information to go on - sometimes it takes a bit of detective work to figure these things out, since he can't tell us why he is doing this :) If your dog isn't neutered, one possibility is that there may be a female dog in heat somewhere nearby - this is a very common cause of male dogs acting restless and unhappy, shivering, and attempting to escape their yard. If he is neutered, then it's possible that he is anxious about being in the yard for some reason, or that he may have some type of medical problem making him feel ill - some dogs prefer to be off by themselves when they don't feel well. You could try a DAP pheromone collar or a natural calming supplement like Zylkene or Composure to see if this helps, or ask his veterinarian if they can think of any reason why he might be doing this, since he/she would have access to your dog's medical history and may know more about what might be bothering him.

You may want to have your dog neutered. He is likely smelling females in heat and wants to go look for them He likely is losing weight due to the hormonal stress, as smelling females would not make him interested in food. He will possibly need worming and a top quality food such as by Royal Canin, or Iams or Hill's. You may want to change to another veterinarian who will actually try to find out whether your dog is ill or not and does not just tell you to let him go (whatever he means by that).

I am sorry to hear about your dog! I would definitely consider getting him neutered, as being an intact male he is much more likely to try to escape the yard as he has a hormonal urge to do so. I would also consider getting an electric fencing system in addition to your normal fence to act as an extra deterrent for escape.

By your description Charlie is not neutered? If he seems ok otherwise then I am suspicious of an in heat female in the vicinity. If this is the problem the hopefully within the next week or so he will calm down. Of course, it is never wrong to have him Seen by a veterinarian to make sure nothing else is wrong. She is likely leaving out of curiosity and stimulation, not necessarily to mate, but also due to different smells and other animals. Your dog likely enjoys her time outside her house and wants to continue to explore, this could be hazardous to her of course so your concern is understandable. There are multiple products to prevent this behaviors such as a shock fence, however these may also cause some pain and discomfort. You can try to fulfill her curiosity with longer more frequent walks then at home keep the doors close so that she does not leave. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Hello, it is not uncommon for unneutered male dogs to roam. This is a natural behavior. Neutering him may decrease some of the desire to roam, but if he has been doing this for awhile, it may already be ingrained in his behavior. I would consider getting a fence, either a phsyical fence, or an electric fence, to try to contain your dog. Or you might consider making him an indoor dog and only having him go outside when supervised. Working at an obedience class may help you train him to return when you call, but I don't think it is going to stop him from wandering when you aren't outside with him.
