My unneutered dog is restless, won't eat, and wants to escape. Why?

You may want to have your dog neutered. He is likely smelling females in heat and wants to go look for them He likely is losing weight due to the hormonal stress, as smelling females would not make him interested in food. He will possibly need worming and a top quality food such as by Royal Canin, or Iams or Hill's. You may want to change to another veterinarian who will actually try to find out whether your dog is ill or not and does not just tell you to let him go (whatever he means by that).

He could have an intestinal infection, a dietary intolerance or even be experiencing an intestinal obstruction from ingesting a foreign object. However, that should improve quickly. If he is otherwise fine with a normal activity level, you can continue to monitor for the next 24 hours. If no improvement, have him evaluated by your veterinarian. It could be that he is painful following his surgery. Theoretically, yes, there are things that can be transmitted to your other dogs. Loss of appetite and lethargy can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. Not urinating can be a separate issue and could be due to an obstruction or just simply to a lack of drinking. I recommend that you have Harley evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. I would recommend you make sure he does not go out unsupervised to avoid him getting in a fight with the other dogs as that can result in unwanted injuries. Do not let him notice the other dogs so that he does not get upset. If he continues to not eat, I recommend you have him evaluated by a veterinarian to check for any possible medical reasons to explain his lack of appetite. Best of luck!

How frustrating for you! I'm afraid it's hard to say why he might be doing this without more information to go on - sometimes it takes a bit of detective work to figure these things out, since he can't tell us why he is doing this :) If your dog isn't neutered, one possibility is that there may be a female dog in heat somewhere nearby - this is a very common cause of male dogs acting restless and unhappy, shivering, and attempting to escape their yard. If he is neutered, then it's possible that he is anxious about being in the yard for some reason, or that he may have some type of medical problem making him feel ill - some dogs prefer to be off by themselves when they don't feel well. You could try a DAP pheromone collar or a natural calming supplement like Zylkene or Composure to see if this helps, or ask his veterinarian if they can think of any reason why he might be doing this, since he/she would have access to your dog's medical history and may know more about what might be bothering him.
