My dog cries extending his front leg, but not when touched. What's wrong?

I would take Casper into a vet today. He sounds painful, which is why he won't walk on the leg and cries when you touch it. He could have injured it, broken a bone, or torn a ligament. He needs to see a vet now to see what is causing the pain so he can be treated. The vet can prescribe pain medications as needed. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Best of luck.

It could be that Loui has strained or torn a ligament, or it could be that he strained a muscle. There's also a possibility that he could have broken a bone. The only way to know for sure is to have him seen by a vet. I would call the vet in the morning to make an appointment for him. I hope this helps!

Did the veterinarian give you any medication to help with pain? If not I would highly encourage you to call tomorrow and request something for pain management. Also, is he limping or holding that leg up? If not then I would be suspicious that something else may be bothering him. Often I find neck or back pain present on dogs who “cry out” for no known reason. Of course many other possibilities exist as well. The most common causes of lameness in his back legs at his age are a ligament tear, knee cap luxation (moves out of its normal groove), followed by a foreign object stuck in his paw. It is also possible that he simply strained a hip muscle. No matter the case, he needs to be evaluated by a vet to determine exactly which. He may just need a little rest and anti-inflammatory therapy, but a sedated exam and radiographs may be needed to rule out significant disease that could need surgery to fix. Do not give anything over the counter for his discomfort as those medications can be quite harmful to Charlie. Keep him from running around and playing too hard until you can get him in to be evaluated by a veterinarian. While I'd recommend having him seen as soon as you can, his condition should be okay to wait for a day or two if you can't get into your vet right away. Hello and thank you for your inquiry. I am so sorry to hear about poor Luna and her pain. Without knowing more about the amount of time she has been exhibiting signs of pain, I can answer this two different ways. If her pain has recently started within the past 24-48 hrs, yes she could have a pulled muscle or strained something and this would cause her to have pain when rising. If the pain on rising has been present for longer than 2 days, we would worry about other things like osteoarthritis or another disease of the musculoskeletal system. Siberian huskys are a breed of dog that can get hip or spinal dysplasia. These diseases can also cause the dog to be painful upon rising but they can than get better as the day progresses. If the pain has only started very recently, my advice is to keep her in a confined place for 24-48 hrs with minimal leash walking as the only activity. During this time, please do not give any OTC or other veterinary pain medicine because you do not want the pain to be masked. If there is no improvement after the confinement or if the signs you are describing have been going on for a long while, I encourage you to take her to your local veterinarian for physical exam and diagnostic testing like xrays as soon as possible.
