Why is my dog suddenly anxious, won't eat, and acts drugged?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It sounds like Teddybear could have moderate separation anxiety (that’s the not letting you out of his sight). The appetite changes can also be due to something like chronic pancreatitis or acid reflux/stomach ulcer. I have also seen clingy behavior and changes to appetite with pain (hurt back/neck especially). Long story short, take Teddybear in for a good checkup with your vet. If there is nothing weird on exam or routine bloodwork, you can chat about anxiety medications that can help. Best of luck to you and Teddybear!

Hopefully, it is due to the stress of your absence and not a drug toxicity. Monitor him for lethargy, ataxia (wobbly gait), drooling loss of appetite, dilated pupils or rapid heart rate/breathing. These can all be signs of drug ingestion. Try withholding food for 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored electrolyte replacement fluid. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until the stool is normal before slowly transitioning to his regular diet. A bland diet can be plain white rice mixed with either cottage cheese, boiled boneless/skinless chicken breasts, cooked/drained ground turkey or cooked/drained ground beef. Gradually acclimate him to your absence by leaving for ever increasing periods of time. Prepare to leave several times during the day. Leave sometimes, sometimes just put your stuff away and stay. Do not make a big deal about leaving or arriving. Ignore your dog for 15 minutes or until he calms down upon your return. Use special toys or treats only when you leave. Take them up when you get home. Pheromone products such as the DAP Diffuser or Adaptil collar may decrease his anxiety while you are gone.

This is highly suspicious of a toxin ingestion, especially if this behavior started all of a sudden. Please take your pet to your local vet right away to have him thoroughly checked. He likely ingested something that is affecting his nervous system. If he is a typical anxious dog, then another explanation here is that he got spooked by something. You can ask your vet for some suggestions to treat his anxiety. Medication + behavioral modification training with a certified animal behaviorist are the best options for treating anxiety in pets. I'm sorry to hear Gizmo isn't acting himself! Without seeing him it is very hard to say. It sound like he could be painful and he's acting anxious. I recommend taking him to the vet for a full physical exam. Have them check for pain in his limbs or spine. Have them check for an ear infection or any evidence of fleas. Also have them check his anal glands. These are common areas that pets have problems and show signs of anxiety. I would also question if there have been any loud noises or thunder storms. I’m sorry to hear about Teddy. There are a couple things that can cause severe vomiting like this - none of them good. Parvo virus or an intestinal blockage are first on my list- both need aggressive treatment. Other, less likely possibilities include toxin, anaphylactoid reaction, or severe gastritis. Unfortunately, he needs to see the vet immediately. This is too excessive to just be “I ate something weird and vomited a little”. The veterinarian will ask lots more questions, do a good physical exam and may recommend x-rays, and/or a parvo test to help narrow down the cause of the vomiting. They can also treat the nausea and administer fluids for dehydration. Best of luck to you and Teddy.

I am sorry to hear that Teddy isn't feeling well. The shaking has me concerned about pain, especially back pain, (they do not always cry when painful), fever, or extreme weakness. Since this has already gone on for more than 24 hours without any improvment, then I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. After a thorough examination they will likely have an idea as to what could be causing his symptoms and will have a recommendation for you. This may involve additional testing such as blood work or an x-ray. I worry that if he isn't seen today that he could become much worse overnight tonight. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon. Poor guy. Since his symptoms are pretty vague and could mean just about anything. I would certainly have him examined by your vet soon. If his gums are pale, then this is an emergency and he should be seen by an ER vet right away. IT sounds like he could have ingested something that is affecting his whole body or he could have an internal organ system problem. I do hope that your pet Spot is going to be ok moving forward.
