My dog has sudden diarrhea but is eating and drinking. What to do?

There are many reasons why dogs develop diarrhea. Some of these reasons are that they are something they shouldn't like trash, fatty foods, or possibly ate something that isn't food at all, such as a piece of a toy, stick, or stone. A dog may also develop diarrhea from parasites, ingesting a toxin, or some sort of infectious disease, among many other possibilities. My general cutoff if a dog is eating and drinking well and acting normally is 36 hours without the diarrhea resolving likely warrants a trip to the veterinarian. Your vet will examine Natty Boh and may recommend abdominal radiographs and possibly some bloodwork. The vet may prescribe an antidiarrhea medication and because diarrhea can lead to dehydration, they may offer to give her some fluids either under her skin (subcutaneously or in an IV). Until you can get Natty Boh to the veterinarian I would recommend making sure she is drinking well. You can also try a bland diet of plain boiled boneless skinless chicken breast and white rice to help settle her GI tract until she can be examined by her vet. I hope this was helpful!

I'm sorry to hear Brodie is not doing well. I would definitely change him back to chicken and rice but I would go ahead and take him in since its been 3 or 4 days of an abnormal stool AND he vomited. They will likely check him for parasites and prescribe medications to calm his GI tract. Better to get in under control sooner rather than later. Hope Brodie feels better soon!

It is common for them to lose their appetite when they have a gastrointestinal disburance. Considering she has diarrhea, she is likely battling an infection, or food intolerance that is also making her feel nauseous. This may be due to another problem like a foreign body, or intestinal worms. Diarrhea is a common problem and is usually self-limiting (will go away on its own). It doesn't appear to be serious right now, but it's always possible that it could be the start of something serious. If Abby has any of the following, then she should see a vet: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Starts acting very depressed 4) Stops eating (i.e. will not even eat treats) or drinking for longer than 24 hours. 5) Diarrhea lasts longer than three days. You can often help them get through this by feeding bland food (boneless chicken and rice is good), but if she won't eat her normal food, then this may not work. Feed small portions (1/2 cup or less) three times a day. You can also add probiotics to the food (can get this at the pet store), which has demonstrated some efficacy for improving diarrhea. Milo is ridiculously cute!! My main concern is that he start drinking. You can offer water with a little chicken broth in it. (But always make sure there is fresh water too.) Start a probiotic like Purina Fortiflora. Try a bland diet (half plain boiled/canned chicken half plain cooked white rice) for a few days and I expect the diarrhea to improve after 1-3 days. (Then transition back to her regular diet slowly over 3-5 days.) If at ANY time he is lethargic, vomiting, not wanting to eat, or you have other concerns, you need to go to the vet clinic right away to make sure it’s nothing more serious. I am so sorry to hear that Buddy has diarrhoea and vomiting. This is common when food changes occur. I would start but resting his gastrointestinal tract for a few hours. Then place him on a bland diet which is easily digestiable such as boiled boneless chicken breast and Steamed rice. Though it is most likely the food change which has caused the issues, there are a number of other potential causes of such clinical signs, including dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, parasite infestation, infection, and ingestion of a toxin or poison. Because you have only noticed these signs over the course of a few hours I would continue to monitor Buddy at home . For hydration purposes you can use low sodium chicken broth or save some of the broth you boil the chicken in and offer that to Buddy. Also provide plenty of fresh water. If Buddy does not improve, has profuse vomiting or diarrhoea, you notice fresh blood, Buddy seems lethargic, in pain or depressed I would advise a trip to the veterinarian. Glad to hear there is some improvement in Tuckers diarrhea. I would stop all food for 24hrs, he can continue to have water. Then reintroduce a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice for 2-3 days. After that you can reintroduce the dog food. Sometime the stomach just needs a complete reset and will take a few days for the stool to return to being completely firm. If after this Tucker is still experiencing diarrhea he should be seen by his veterinarian. Hope this helps and Tucker starts feeling better soon.

If he is acting normal then you can withhold food for 12 hours and then offer him a small amount of a bland diet, like boiled chicken and white rice, and see how he does with that. You could also add a probiotic to his food. If the diarrhea continues, he starts vomiting, and/or becomes lethargic then he needs to be examined by a vet for treatment. He could have an infection, parasite, colitis, HGE, etc. and your vet can run lab-work to help diagnose and treat. Hope he feels better soon!
