My dog struggles to pee. Is distilled water safe for him to drink?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 20 days old | 4 lbs

Bud spent time living in his litter mates waste. When I got him he was struggling to urinate. Having had many pets in the past I knew it wasn't incontinence. I recognized similarities with a condition my cat had where his urethra was blocked. We switched him to distilled water and massage his bladder and urethra during a warm morning bath. This has helped, but I've been told distilled water is bad for dogs. My main question is, should I continue to give him distilled water? Stop? Or stop soon?

Distilled water is not a good idea for dogs that are suspected to have bladder stones. Regular water contains salt and other minerals that increase thirst causing the dog to drink more, thus diluting the urine. In fact, some internists recommend adding salt to the pet's diet. Bud would also benefit from a urinary specific diet such as Royal Canine s/o, that helps reduce the occurrence of bladder stones.

Distilled water, if given a lot of frequently or is the only source of water for the dog is not a good thing. Distilled water, unlike regular spring water, does not contain any minerals in it which help keep dogs healthy. If Bud is only drinking distilled water, he is getting no minerals which can be harmful to his health. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies can occur when distilled water is the only water an animal is drinking. I would stop now and switch to spring water.

Any water that is safe for humans to drink is safe for dogs. If you are feeding a normal, commercial diet dog food that is AAFCO certified, it is fortified to contain all the needed vitamins and minerals so the content in the water isn't really a concern. The vast majority of dogs drink tap water and do fine (as long as it is safe to drink). I hope this helps.

My dog on canned food won't drink water. Normal for bladder issues?

Canned food has a high water content, so it can be normal for dogs to stop drinking much water when they are eating canned food. You might want to talk to your vet about testing Sadie's urine specific gravity and urine pH after she's been on the food for a few weeks to make sure they are in the ideal range for a dog with bladder stones. If so you probably don't have to worry about encouraging her to drink more water.

I personally would not recommend a home cooked diet for a dog with bladder stones. A therapeutic diet is probably best to prevent more stones from forming and the foods restrict minerals used to form stones, encourage water consumption so that water is dilute, and keeping the urine at an ideal pH. Bladder stones are collections of mineral crystals that combine together in the urinary tract. Excess minerals can encourage the formation of crystals in the urine, leading to the creation of bladder stones. Urinary diets have the correct balance of minerals to maintain bladder health. In addition, they have low protein and calcium, which results in decreased urinary concentrations of stone-forming constituents. To get the biggest benefit, I recommend choosing a urinary specific food for Liir, as regular diets will not be formulated to help with bladder health. I recommend Hill's Science Diet u/d. Is an all-dry dog food diet safe or does it cause kidney stones?

A well balanced dry food should not cause kidney stones, which are indeed very rare in dogs (certain breeds such as dalmations have higher risk and should be fed a specialised preventive diet either wet or dry; this would not be recommended in all dogs). Bladder crystals can occur with highly concentrated urine where dogs do not drink sufficiently and can be aggravated with poorly formulated diet. In such affected dogs specialist wet food is generally prescribed but this would not lead to a conclusion that dry food is unsafe for dogs
