Is it safe for my dog to drink only distilled water for tear stains?

Distilled water is not a good idea for dogs that are suspected to have bladder stones. Regular water contains salt and other minerals that increase thirst causing the dog to drink more, thus diluting the urine. In fact, some internists recommend adding salt to the pet's diet. Bud would also benefit from a urinary specific diet such as Royal Canine s/o, that helps reduce the occurrence of bladder stones.

Any water that is safe for humans to drink is safe for dogs. If you are feeding a normal, commercial diet dog food that is AAFCO certified, it is fortified to contain all the needed vitamins and minerals so the content in the water isn't really a concern. The vast majority of dogs drink tap water and do fine (as long as it is safe to drink). I hope this helps.

I don't think her health will improve once you change to bottle water, but she will not be at risk of getting infections that may be caused by drinking tap water.

Hi I don't recommend using distilled water in your tank as the "osmolarity" of the water can cause problems for your fish. Either pick up a bottle of water conditioner from a pet store or draw a large bucket of tap water and let it sit for 4 or 5 days. Some of the chemicals will evaporate out when left to sit, but it's not such an ideal option.

Water, neutral soap (you can use a shampoo designed for dogs) and constant cleaning are the only options I am afraid. Boric acid could be irritant for the eyes and would not be that effective anyway, so I would suggest to avoid its use.

Pets can develop tear stains due to many issues including food, water quality, minerals in the water and some dogs produce the discoloration naturally due to blocked tear ducts. Since this has just started, I recommend to have Bella checked by the veterinarian who will look for clues to a medical condition like allergies or an infection. If no medical cause is identified, you may try a product like Angel Eye which comes in wipes or an oral supplement. You can also try allowing her only distilled water. You can also try a food change to something like Nutro Essentials which has non-GMO products and no artificial ingredients. Avoid grain free diets.
