My dog is straining to poop but nothing comes out. When to see a vet?

It is possible that there is no more stool in the colon because the soft poop was the precursor to diarrhea. But the only way to differentiate an empty colon from a constipated colon is to have Buddy examined by a vet. While diarrhea is not normal, dogs will often strain to defecate when they have diarrhea due to all of the inflammation in the colon and rectum. I would take Mick to your vet so they can treat the diarrhea, then he'll likely stop straining after that.

Sometimes irritation in the colon or problems passing her full amount of stool (like a constipation). If she has not been checked for parasites in the last month, I recommend to have this done. You can try changing her food as well to something like Royal Canin which tends to be low residue and very easy on the colon. If this looks more like constipation, canned pumpkin may help. You could start giving her 2 tablespoons of canned pumpkin with her meals which may help with cases of mild constipation. Oh no, poor Molly! I would take her into a the vet right away. It's quite serious that she hasn't pooped in three days, and it could be caused by anal sac impaction, intestinal parasites, a foreign body, too little fiber in the diet, lack of exercise, or even tumors in the GI tract. The vet can give her a laxative or an enema to help her poop, or it may need to be removed manually under sedation. The vet can also diagnose the cause of the constipation and can treat her for it. Please do not give her a human enema. In addition to potentially causing trauma to her colon, human enemas are not safe to use in dog's due causing electrolyte imbalances.

Excellent question. Some pets can go 48 hours before they have a bowel movement and this can be completely normal, as long as you don't notice your dog straining to defecate. If you see your pet straining to defecate, that can indicate your pet is constipated, and he should then be seen by your veterinarian as soon as possible to relieve this issue.
