My dog hasn't pooped in 30 hours. When is it time to see a vet?

If your dog has not eaten in three days, this is something you should be very concerned about and should seek veterinary attention immediately. If your dog, however, is eating completely normal but has not defecated in three days, this is nothing to be worried about yet. As long as your dog continues to eat normally, drink normally, Urinating normally, and plays, it sometimes can take up to a week to have a bowel movement. If Romeo has had recent excessive stool production, it may be normal to have less for a day or two. It's fine for a dog to go a day without pooping, especially with that history. If he begins to strain unproductively, become painful, uninterested in food, or vomiting, contact your veterinarian.

It's not been 2 days yet, I wouldn't be too worried yet, after an enema a dog can go without pooping for 2-3 days and it is considered normal, as the enema has emptied all his intestines. If he is eating and overall himself- continue monitoring him.

Dogs are much like people in this regard. Anywhere from 3 times a day to every other day can be normal. If Ozzy is happy, eating, playing, and urinating normally, don’t worry about it. As long as he poops within 24-36 hours I’m not panicking. Do watch for straining, blood, or any other concerning signs. If you see any of these, it’s time to see the vet.

A cat can go up to 48 hours without pooping, meaning anything past 48 hrs is a cause for concern, especially if you see your pet straining to defecate and nothing coming out. Ideally every pet should have a bowel movement daily, however there can be some slight variations here depending on the GI transit time and diet. I would monitor for signs of straining and also vomiting, lethargy or lack of appetite which means that kitty should be seen for constipation/obstipation. There are also medications and supplements available through your vet (i.e. Laxatone or Lactulose) that can help keep the GI track moving along if this becomes a chronic issue. Also fiber supplementation can be discussed with your vet.

I would continue to watch Midnight. If she ate part of a bedsheet that gets stuck in her small intestine, dogs will often be lethargic, have a decreased appetite, belly pain, or vomiting. Sometimes things like a sheet will move slowly through the intestines, and it could take 3-5 days to come out. If the dog is feeling ill, then often IV fluids and enemas can help it pass a little faster. If the dog is very ill, then surgery would be needed to remove the obstruction.

As long as your poodle is eating, drinking, and playing normally, I would not be concerned yet. In fact, many older animals don’t have as many bowel movements daily as younger dogs do. I have even heard situations about completely normal animals not defecating for an entire week. But, If your pet has not defecated in another 48 hours, you may want to call the veterinarian just to see if they will prescribe a laxative or a fiber supplement to help the bowel movements along. If your dog, however, starts to feel lethargic or if they do not eat as much as they normally do, I encourage you to contact the veterinarian sooner than the 48 hour waiting period.
