Can I give my dog a stool eating deterrent if she's on phenobarbital?

Hi there. You can certainly try this, if you want to. In my experience, most treats and food additives intended to discourage dogs from eating their poop aren't very effective - it's hard to make poop taste worse than it already does! The best thing to do is simply go out with your dog when he poops. and pick up the stool with a bag and dispose of it before he has a chance to eat it.

It's such a gross behavior of dogs, isn't it?? The best way to get her to stop is to pick up her poop and her sister's poop immediately after they go potty. If it's taken away right after they poop, then she can't get to it to eat it. Keep her on a leash when you are out in public, and immediately move her away from any poop left by other dogs. Stool deterrents can work, and there really isn't one best one, but make sure that whatever one you chose does not contain garlic. That's because garlic is poisonous to dogs. The best way to stop her, however, is to remove her access to it.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is really no good medical therapy to prevent this so I am not sure how well those pills would work. This is usually a behavior that dogs tend to improve from relatively quickly. I would just try to avoid him eating his feces and discourage this behavior as much as possible. You can try For-Bid powder. Mix it into the food. Buy it from your veterinarian or at the local Petco. You can also leash walk Sadie to steer her away from stool or areas where there is stool. A last resort would be a basket muzzle which may prevent her from eating stool or at least make it harder to give you time to get her away from it. Pick up any stool in the yard before she goes outside or as soon as she is done defecating. Review her diet with your veterinarian to confirm adequate nutrition and use a variety of toys, tasks and exercise to keep her distracted from any stool.

Cleaning up immediately after the dogs defecate and/or leash walking Dove may be the only viable way to prevent this. In some cases training along with deterrents such as Forbid may help, but preventing access to stool is the true solution. Coprophagia (eating poop) occurs in some dogs for no particular reason. It is not an indication of hunger or something lacking in their diet. There is a product available (in the US at least) called For-Bid that can help prevent dogs from eating poop. There is certainly a risk that KC could get worms from ingesting feces including cow manure. I would suggest keeping her on a monthly preventative that would prevent worm infestation.

The published dose is 15mg/lb 2-3 times daily but you should always check with your veterinarian first before giving anything, including supplements. Your vet may have a preferred vendor or source. Since it is a supplement, it is not regulated by the FDA which can lead to wide variations in amounts, ingredients and quality. Additionally, it can cause GI upset in some dogs and should not be given to dogs on certain antibiotics, chemo or blood thinners. There is a product, For-Bid, that is specifically for dogs that eat stool. It is sprinkled on food. You may be able to purchase it online, in the local Petco or from your veterinarian. Rule out other causes for the behavior such as boredom, curiosity, or nutritional deficiency.
