Is it safe for my dog to take stomach medicine long-term for a hernia?

You could talk to your vet about a GI specific diet, as this may help reduce inflammation in the GI tract. It also won’t hurt anything to deworm him, and may help if he has Physeloptera (a stomach worm). If he is well controlled on his medications (omeprazole) and a GI diet, it’s probably fine to leave it at that. Regurgitating once every few weeks is not a huge deal... if it becomes more frequent or other symptoms (including weight loss) develop, talk to your vet about further diagnostics and treatment. Hello. I would not say your Lily is in overt pain, but this cannot be comfortable. She is probably vomiting intermittently, perhaps you are seeing a little blood, too in the vomitus. HHs can compromise esophageal function & the longer you let it go the more \pathology you can see & the greater the risk for aspiration pneumonia. Some pain medications can cause stomach upset. If Olive continues to vomit, I would recommend stopping the pain medication and contacting your veterinarian. Other potential causes for vomiting include eating something irritating to the intestinal tract, infections or metabolic problems such as kidney or liver disease.

In the long term, there is a thought the chronic famotidine use may decrease some nutrient absorption and lead to excessive gastric acid production with possible esophageal acid reflux if it is discontinued. However, most internal medicine specialists still preferentially recommend famotidine over other antacids (such as omeprazole/Prilosec) for chronic use as it is a bit more "mild" in its mechanism of action. I know you mentioned changing foods, but consider discussing a diet trial with a hydrolyzed "hypoallergenic" diet with Brody's vet. If he has a degree of a food allergy or inflammatory bowel disease causing his vomiting and skipping of meals, these hydrolyzed diets fed for 2-3 months can remove a lot of antigenic stimulation in the GI tract and potentially prevent a lot of GI upset.

You cannot give him any human pain killers, only pain killers that have been prescribed by your vet. he can be operated, there is probably no other option as his intestines are likely getting blocked due to the hernia, special caution will need to be taken because of his epilepsy, his age and his general health condition.

Vomiting that many times in a short period of time is a bit concerning. The orange-y color is bile and that is normal gastric fluid if they are vomiting with the stomach empty. I do think you should get him to a vet at the first possibility. If you have a human antacid medication you can typically use them in dogs. I can't tell you any dosing without knowing what you have. Inguinal hernias can be a trickier hernia to repair and the surgery could fail. The odds are more in favor of it succeeding.
