Are dog stomach bugs contagious and can they spread to other dogs?

I am sorry Jax is not feeling well. Giardia can be spread and is contagious between dogs. If you had a dog at home diagnosed with giardia it is very possible the other dogs have it too. However I would recommend taking them to the vet for confirmation to make sure you are not overlooking another possibilities. Hope that helps

Stomach cancer may have a genetic compound, or could just be bad luck. Cancer is when cells start to multiply excessively, but do not, like normal cells, die off when they have reached a specific age, So they just keep growing. Cancer, with the exception of very very few, is not contagious. Stomach cancer is not contagious.

I'm sorry to hear that Buster isn't feeling well! Vomiting and diarrhea can occur as a result of a virus, parasites, stomach upset from eating different foods or treats, among other health conditions. If he is acting normally and still able to keep water down, you can try monitoring him at home first by withholding food for 12-24 hours. After that time, offer a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days, then gradually transition back to his normal diet over another 5-7 days. However, if Buster's vomiting or diarrhea worsen, or if he becomes lethargic and stops drinking, a trip to the vet will be in order to assure that he has not become dehydrated and to get to the bottom of the problem. Hello. Most gastrointestinal disease is spread by the fecal nasal or fecal oral route. This means your dog has to come into actual contact with contaminated feces from the affected dog in order to get sick. By just sniffing & touching you, your dog should be fine, but do consider updating his vaccinations to protect him from other diseases that are out there. I am sorry to hear that everyone has been so sick! The one parasite that can transfer between species that produces symptoms you describe is something called giardia. You may consider asking your physician to test you for it. Other possibilities include salmonella, Cryptosporidium, and campylobacter. When testing my patients for these more rare diseases I use a test through idexx called a GI fast panel PCR. You may Consider asking your veterinarian to run this test. Using proper hygiene when handling pets is important as well as making sure they are not eating any forms of raw diet that can transmit disease. Best of luck and I hope you improve soon. In any situation when many dogs are affected, conditions such as parasites, bacterial/viral infections, or exposure to toxins are most suspected. Hello, if it was infectious, depending on the virus or parasite, you can get an incubation period which may delay the onset of clinical signs. Additionally, the events may be unrelated. That is, Pepper could be having its own cause for the diarrhea. In terms of the metronidazole, Bella is safe to continue to receive it if your veterinarian deems so necessary. You could use a bland diet (plain white rice, boiled skinless and boneless chicken, and low fat cottage cheese) for 3-5 days to see if this helps their clinical signs resolve.
