My dog delivered dead puppies but acts pregnant. Is it an emergency?

She should not be straining to push out a puppy for more than hour. This can be a sign she needs help giving birth, and she may need a c section to safely deliver her puppies. If you suspect there are more puppies that have not been born yet it is best to seek emergency care ASAP, especially if she has gone several hours without producing another puppy. Your vet may be able to examine or X-ray her to see if any more puppies are in the birth canal. Most small breed dogs typically only have 1-2 puppies in a litter normally, but there can be exceptions and if she seems in distress or you suspect a stuck puppy, seeking care ASAP is needed.

I would recommend getting her to a vet as soon as possible. If she delivered puppies dead on friday morning and now it is saturday evening this is to long. I would recommend getting her to a vet now for an x-ray to count the number of puppies still remaining. An ultrasound to make sure they are still alive and not in stress and even bloodwork to make sure she does not need calcium supplementation to help with pushing. The vet can either give her oxytocin to help with contractions or might recommend a c-section. I hope that ronda roo is okay and you get some healthy puppies.

I strongly recommend veterinary assistance as it is possible there is a pup stuck causing such a degree of pain, especially if no pup is born within 15-30mins. Contact your local humane society for advice on emergency shelters
