My Maltese dog choked on food. Why is he still making choking sounds?

She may have a scratch or swelling in the throat. It could be infection of the throat / trachea. Small breed dogs, like Shih-tzu or Yorkie suffer from tracheal collapse which can produce gagging and loud coughing. I would recommend you to take your dog to your vets to establish diagnosis and to get treatment.

He likely aspirated some food. If it's just one day of hacking, then it's OK to wait and see if it clears in the next day or two. However, we always worry about aspiration pneumonia, which can be more serious. If the hacking persists for more than two days and is not getting better, then it's best to take him to the vet. If your dog has always done this, then I would not be too worried about a condition causing him to gag when eating. However, if this gagging is recent (within the last year), then I would get him checked-out by a vet. I'm particularly concerned about laryngeal paralysis, which can happen in older dogs and cause them to aspirate their food and water. I hope that helps and Anubis gets better soon.

Poor Maui. This sounds a lot like an upper respiratory infection. It usually sounds more like they are choking than a true cough. You can try some Benadryl to see if there is an allergy component to it. See link below. Since it has been going on for 2 weeks and she is only 7 months old, I would have your vet take a look at her. She may need some antibiotics. I this is a URI and it's left untreated, it could turn into pneumonia which is much more difficult to treat. If Stella is eating her treats too fast, that could be causing the choking. Try giving her treats in smaller pieces, not giving her another piece until she ate the previous piece. Keep an eye on her for now with this behavior, and offer her some water. Her throat may be irritated from choking.
