How long does a dog's steroid shot last? Is Temaril-P a steroid?

A long acting corticosteroid shot usually last 8 weeks, but can last longer. I'm wondering if the drug you are speaking of is Temaril-P. That is prescribed to dogs for relief of itching, and it contains a steroid (prednisolone).

The effects of a steroid injection can last anywhere from 1-2 days to 4-6 weeks depending on the type that was given, so it's hard to answer your question without knowing the name of the drug she received - if your paperwork from the vet has a specific drug name, feel free to re-post and I can be more specific :). I'm not familiar with any medication called tamarind, but there is a medication called Temeril-P that is commonly used for the treatment of allergy symptoms in dogs. It's actually a combination of two different drugs - a steroid and an anti-histamine. Your vet may have given a steroid injection to help get Bailey some relief quickly, then sent the oral medication for you to continue with at home.

Hello, thank you for your question about Sophie. Yes Temaril-P can be used for longer than 3-4 days if the veterinarian feels it is warranted. The tapering dose that was prescribed to you is important to prevent any side effects of the medication. Some side effects that can occur include GI upset (decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea) and increased drinking and urinating. If you begin to notice any of these side effects I would recommend reaching out to your veterinarian to see if a change in the medication schedule might be warranted. Hope this helps!

My dog has accidents on Temaril-P. Can I stop it after 3 days?

On short=term use it is not necessary to taper off the Temaril-P. Check with your veterinarian though. I would still finish the prescribed course, as this medication also takes inflammation and that could still be present after the coughing stops.

The answer to your question really depends on when the injection was given, what type of steroid it was, what dose of steroid was given and what his Prednisone regimen has been, so your vet will need to answer that question. If your vet is already closed for the day, it will likely be safer to skip his Prednisone dose tonight and call them first thing in the morning to discuss when to resume his Prednisone. Some steroid injections only last for 12 hours, but some last for much longer, so you do not want Chester to have too high of a steroid dose tonight. How long can my dog take low-dose steroids for allergies safely?

That is a low dose, however, there is no set time frame for you to see side effects. Some dogs are more sensitive and develop side effects quickly, and some dogs are on it longer before this happens. Side effects include excessive thirst and hunger, panting, developing a pot-bellied appearance, and losing overall muscle tone. It is not a medication that is ideal for long-term use. Allergies can be very frustrating to manage. If you have a veterinary dermatologist in your area, you may consider allergy testing and even allergy shots to try and make Lily more comfortable. My dog has bladder problems after a cortisone shot. How long?

Steroid shots effects can last three to four weeks, which is why your vet said this will likely continue for that amount of time. Typically dogs do regain control of their bladder after this, but without seeing Maryjane in person, I can't say for certain. Continue to monitor her, and if she is still having bladder problems after this time passes, then take her back into the vet. I hope this helps!
