My dog stepped in poison ivy. What should I do to keep him safe?

When a dog eats poison ivy, it can cause GI problems such as vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Luckily though, ingestion isn't fatal and if you do see some GI signs from Sam eating it, I can give you a home remedy for it. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Dogs are fairly resistant to poison ivy (though they can carry the oil on their fur and expose their people.) So I think these pimples are likely unrelated to her exposure in your yard. I wouldn't put anything on her skin overnight. If she is licking the area you may want to place her in an e-collar (cone) to prevent her from irritating her skin further. I agree with calling your vet in the morning and making an appointment. They will be able to give you proper shampoo to help and prescribe antibiotics if necessary.

Judging from the pictures, this could be a skin infection, skin allergy, reaction to something such as poison ivy or skin mites. So that the most appropriate diagnostics and treatments can be recommended, I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at this in person. Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. Poor Snow! Her skin looks really reactive. I really think you should take Snow to your vet for an exam at your earliest convenience. She may need oral antibiotics or some anti-inflammatory medications. I don't think it is an emergency though. To me it looks like a contact dermatitis (allergy). Poison ivy is possible but it is actually pretty rare in dogs. Benadryl is fine to give but you need to make sure you are giving enough. Dogs take a MUCH higher dose than we do. The dose is 1mg/pound of body weight. For example, 25 pound dog should get one 25mg capsule/tablet. If she is 50 pounds, then 2 of the 25mg capsules. You can round up if needed as it is pretty safe to give. She can have that every 12 hours. That is just terrible! As far as I'm aware, there is no dog poison that will soak into their feet and kill them. Washing Noir's feet is a good idea, and to be safe, I'd take her into the vet to have her checked out. Best of luck.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry Charlie is having this problem. It is likely a contact rash and not usually a terribly threatening issue. I would recommend bathing him in your regular shampoo with a good rinse after. If it is very itchy-Benadryl is generally accepted as safe for dogs and you can find a dosing for this medication online by searching the Merck Veterinary Manual. Triple antibiotic ointment is considered safe topically if your pet is not allowed to ingest any of it as well. If the rash spreads further or worsens quickly or you notice any other issues or abnormal behaviors besides this rash-generally this then warrants a trip to your vet to stave off symptoms and be treated for a potential reaction. The area is infected which can cause some itching. It may be due to an allergy from something in the environment or fleas. I would check to see if you can find anything fleas or start a flea prevention since it is a simple fix. The infection will need to have antibiotics to fully clear but a medicated bath can help flush the hair follicle and start working on the infection. You vet can discuss the several medicines that control allergies and help keep this under control if it is long term problem.
