My dog is staring at nothing for hours. Is this a sign of seizures?

I'm a little concerned that these symptoms you report may be mild seizure activity. Especially if she does not really respond to you during the event. Circling can also be a symptom of something going on with the head (seizure or otherwise). If this has occurred more than once I would recommend a visit to your vet for a baseline neurologic exam and some blood work to rule out anything wrong with her blood sugar, electrolytes, or organ function. If you can catch an episode on video this can be really helpful so that your vet can determine if this is neurologic in origin. If determined to be neurologic in origin, then there are many things that can cause this, and further testing and/or anti-seizure medication may be needed. Other signs of seizures would be strange behavior before the seizure, the seizure itself can include shaking or tending of all the muscles, Bailey may urinate or defecate during as well. I recommend keeping a close eye on her and trying to film this if it happens again to show your vet. They can determine the cause of the seizure with blood work and more advanced imaging such as a CT scan. If seizure activity is confirmed, Bailey will likely be placed on anti-seizure medication. It is possible that he is thinking/seeing/smelling something. However, if you feel like he is not acting normally during one of these episodes, you may want to have him checked out by a vet. It is possible there is a medical cause for this behavior, such as seizures or epilepsy or low blood glucose. Try to get a video of this happening to share with the vet so maybe they can figure out what is going on.

I wonder if these two events are potentially the post ictal phase of seizures. A grand mal seizure is characterized by loss of consciousness and convulsions, but the active phase can be quite short. There is then a recovery period called the post ictal phase where the dog is disoriented, can act aggressive or clingy, can pant heavily, or have trouble walking. I would recommend seeing a veterinarian especially if Tullamore is still walking abnormally. Low blood sugar, anemia or liver disease can cause similar signs but usually they would be persistent.

Hello, I am sorry to hear about Pinkie. The events that you are describing sound similar to a seizure event. Seizures can present in many different ways, not only the generalized full body seizures but also more subtle or focused events with tremoring or shaking. When a pet has a seizure they become unresponsive to stimuli and are not mentally present, meaning that they will not respond if you call their names or try to get their attention. Additionally after a seizure the brain goes through a recovery period where Pinkie may appear improved but not quite right. I would recommend having Pinkie evaluated by a veterinarian for examination and further testing if warranted. It would be helpful if you could take a video of these events as well as keep a log of when these events occur and how long they last. If Pinkie has an event lasting more than five minutes, more than 1 event in 24 hours, or continuous events without recovery she should be seen immediately by a veterinarian. Hi there. This sounds more like a focal seizure, or some abnormal activity in her nervous system. Not responding to any stimulus indicates that her nervous system is overloaded and she cannot respond. The length of time the episodes are lasting is also concerning. I would recommend finding a veterinary neurologist to take her to. Your local vet may be able to make a recommendation. The signs you are describing sound like Coco may have had a seizure. She may have been confused afterwards, which is known as the post ictal period, and can consist of her seeming a little "off". Seizures can be caused by epilepsy, brain inflammation or tumors. I recommend keeping a close eye on Coco, and try to film any future episodes to show your vet.
