Why does my dog bob her head and become unresponsive for hours?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

I have what I believe to be a behavior question. My 3 year old female dachsund began exhibiting odd behavior approximalely a month ago. A couple times a week she will lie down and simply bob her head sometimes for as long as 12-13 hours. Most of these episodes last 5-6 hours and end with no whatsoever when she stands up and jumps up on the couch or retrieves a favorite toy. During these episodes she will NOT respond to any command, eat, drink, or go outside to potty.

Hi there. This sounds more like a focal seizure, or some abnormal activity in her nervous system.

Not responding to any stimulus indicates that her nervous system is overloaded and she cannot respond. The length of time the episodes are lasting is also concerning.

I would recommend finding a veterinary neurologist to take her to. Your local vet may be able to make a recommendation. I would also try and take of video of her when she is having an episode to show the neurologist.

I hope that helps and good luck with your pup. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
