Is it safe for my large dog to walk stairs after spay surgery?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. If her mobility is back to normal, then it is fine for her to go up and down stairs. If this exercise seems to cause her any discomfort, then I would avoid it. However, it should not cause her any problems. I hope this information helps!

Within the week she will probably be feeling great and ready to walk and play normally, however, keep it on the easy side until the vet gives the ok. Do NOT allow: running, jumping, chasing anything, wrestling with playmates, swimming, etc. until you vet gives the Ok or until 14 days after the spay. Best wishes to you and Dakota!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The only thing I can't tell from the picture is if the skin is together at the red area. If it is then I think it is fine. The red area appears to be a scab or dried blood that will likely heal. Just be sure she isn't licking the incision (use an E-collar or T-shirt) and that you are keeping her exercise restricted (no running, jumping, stairs and leash walks outside only). Good luck!

Chew toys and food kongs are ideal at this stage as she would be likely to lie down and rest the wound in order to 'play' with them. Regular, limited lead walking will also help to deal with some of her excessive energy. She should not be playing and running, jumping or stretching games as these may cause the stitches to rupture

I recommend to wait to have her groomed until there are no scabs or rough skin. It’s OK if you can feel the sutures underneath. You do want to make sure the skin is 100% healed and normal. I think you guys are very close to that point so maybe wait another week or so. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

She should be kept as quiet as possible for at least the first 10-14 days after surgery and until the stitches are removed. This is to ensure appropriate surgical healing.
