Is it safe for spay stitches to stay in longer? When can my dog walk?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | 47 lbs

Another question, my dog Harley got spayed Aug 28 , so today (sept 7) would be 10 days after the surgery. We aren’t scheduled until Monday sept 10 to have her stitches removed, will it hurt her since they’ll be in 2 days longer? (12 days) Also can she go out on her walk or regular exercise again once the stitches are removed or should I wait 2-3 days more before taking her out?

Hi, it will be fine for the stitches to stay in for another couple of days. With regards to resuming her normal exercise, your vet will be able to advise you better after examining Harley’s wound on Monday. Hope this helps ! Thank you using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
