My Staffy puppy might have shaking syndrome. What will genetic tests tell me?

I am sorry this has happened. To test for Addisons disease you would do the ACTH stim test. I do not think there is a genetic test for the parents. This is an adrenal gland disease and basically the dog is not producing enough mineralcorticoids. Thank you for using PetCoach. Thanks for the picture! Unfortunately the way they have it printed out, it doesn't include what is normal for their lab machine, so I still can't fully interpret the results. From the lab that I use, the liver values that you have gotten would be considered normal, or very close to the normal range. Did the vet that ran the bloodwork give you any indication that they were abnormal? Seizures in a young dog could be caused by many things, including portosystemic or liver shunt (which may need ultrasound or bile acids testing to diagnose), epilepsy, hypoglycemia, kidney disease, intracranial disease, infection, among several others. I would recommend that you discuss these possibilities with your vet and see what other testing can be done to look at these other systems.

Von Willebrand can be tested for with blood tests, and you can ask the breeder for copies of tests to prove the sire and dam do not have it. In terms of Wobbler syndrome, you can ask the breeder if they have a history of dogs with this syndrome. I hope this helps!

Congratulations on your new baby! He is adorable! The most common tests we start with to evaluate for liver shunts are baseline labwork (which includes a full chemistry, complete blood count and urinalysis) as well as a pre and post prandial bile acid profile. The bile acid profile is to specifically look at the liver function. Any of those tests results are available within a couple of days. Unfortunately, sometimes those test results are inconclusive, and we have to do additional testing. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Ivy! I would have ran a chemisty as well. If her platelets were low then I would have also tested for tick borne diseases. And because you thought her urine was foul smelling I would have ran a urine sample to check for a urinary tract infection. I hope the doxycycline does the trick and I hope Ivy does well!

Weakness and shaking can sometimes be a sign of nutrient/blood chemical problems, but shaking can also be a sign of nerves, cold, etc. If you do suspect an issue, bringing Sugar into the vet for an exam and blood work to check her values is best.

I am so sorry that your pet is having weird episodes of what sounds like a possible seizure and now bloody urine. I am not sure if your vet tested her urine to confirm that she also has a UTI, but I assume that is the case since antibiotics were given. I would be concerned about any underlying imbalances that can lead to seizures such as a liver shunt, so bloodwork analysis would be the next best step for Winter. If she does have an underlying condition like a liver shunt, then this should be treated for in order to manage both her condition and also her seizures. Some pets have idiopathic (no underlying cause) for seizures, but due to her young age, I am highly suspicious of a congenital cause. I hope that you are able to get to the bottom of things soon!
