My dog sprained his leg. What can I do to help him heal at home?

Pet's info: Dog | Doberman Pinscher | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 95 lbs

A couple of days ago, our dog sprained or strained his hind leg, we think when he slipped running up the stairs. it seems to be minor. There is no swelling or areas of warmth, but it is tender to the touch and he has a limp and does not want to put his full weight on it. Other than a limp, it has not hindered his movement. Besides limiting his activity and preventing running and jumping, are there other steps we can take to help him heal?

Sorry to hear that Indiana has hurt his leg! It sounds like you're already doing everything you can, with restricting his exercise to rest the leg. If the limp has not resolved after 7-10 days, I would recommend taking him to the vet for an orthopedic exam and possible x-rays, since this would indicate that he may have a more serious problem than a simple sprain or pulled muscle.

Hello, and thank you for your question. I'm sorry to hear that Alfie is unwell. If he has a sprain, I would recommend strict rest for at least 7 days (no running, jumping, rough play; only short outings for bathroom breaks). You can also try using a warm compress on the affected area for 10 minutes several times a day, which will help to reduce the swelling.

If the limping does not improve in the next 2 days, I would recommend taking him to the vet, to confirm that he does not have anything more serious than a sprain - they may recommend x-rays for this purpose. At minimum, the vet can prescribe anti-inflammatory pain medications which will help his leg heal.

If it just started you can let alfie rest for a few days with minimal walking and minimal physical exercise, if it does not improve within 3-4 days you will have to take him to the vet in order to get it checked and treated, he might need pain killers for a few days. if the vet think it's something more serious such as a fracture, joint injury or foreign body, he might recommend to have an xray done as well.

Poor Indy. She may have overdone it, or could have strained something. I recommend resting her for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a leash, and bring her right back in when she's done. If she still appears painful after this time, then I would take her into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. She may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I hope this helps.

My dog jumped off the bed and is limping. Is his leg sprained?

Aww poor guy. He may have a muscle sprain. You can apply a cold compress onto the areas that appear sore for 5-10 minute intervals twice a day for next few days. Also limit his activity, don't encourage active play, and leash walk him only outside. If this is just a muscle sprain then he should improve over the next 48-72 hrs. However keep in mind that he should be able to at least move the limb somewhat, there shouldn't be a significant amount of noticeable swelling, and it shouldn't appear to be dangling (possible fracture). These are all signs that you shouldn't wait and should take him in right away. I do not recommend giving him any over the counter human pain medication, because these are not safe for pets due to high risk of acute liver and kidney damage. If he is still limping after that time frame, or getting any worse, then it is best to have your vet take a look at him to make sure he doesn't have more serious internal injuries (ligament injury, hairline bone fracture, dislocation).

If Bruno was in a car accident or has severely sprained his hind end it is best to seek veterinary care in person. They may recommend additional testing such as X-rays to rule out any more serious issues such as breaks or severe injury to the hind end, back, or legs. Your vet can also provide treatment including pain and anti-inflammatory medications as needed to get Bruno comfortable. Limiting all activity to leashed-potty breaks only can also help until he is examined by your vet.

My dog slipped downstairs, limping, not sore. Is it a sprain?

Poor Becks! It's possible that he may have sprained or twisted it when he slipped. If he's acting okay otherwise, I would recommend restricting his exercise for the next few days to see if the limping resolves - short leash walks outside to potty, no running or jumping. There are unfortunately no over-the-counter human pain medications that are safe to give him, so I wouldn't recommend giving him anything right now. If it's a minor injury like a sprain, he should be back to normal in 2-3 days. If there is no improvement in the next few days, or if he seems excessively painful, it would be best to have him seen by a vet since he may need x-rays to help determine what's wrong. Your vet can also prescribe safe and effective pain medication for him if needed.

My dog is limping after twisting her leg. Is a short walk okay?

Poor Lola! You're doing exactly the right thing by restricting her activity - no stairs or jumping on or off of the furniture, if possible. You can take her for short walks to potty, but no more than 5-10 minutes and definitely keep her on leash. If the injury is minor, like a mild sprain or pulled muscle, she should be much improved within the next 24 hours or so. If there is no improvement in the next 2-3 days, I would recommend taking her to the vet for x-rays to find out what's wrong.

If you have pain and anti-inflammatory medications that are safe for dogs then using those medications and strictly resting him is all you can do. No running, jumping, stairs, on/off furniture and short leash walks only. If the limp isn't improved in 7 days he needs an exam and likely an X-ray to check for a broken bone. I wish Gojo a speedy recovery!
