My dog has a strange spot on its leg. Is it yeast or skin infection?

It is possible we could have yeast or bacteria here. The only way to tell for certain is to do what is called a cytology on the area. Your vet can take a sample (they may use a piece of tape or press a microscope slide directly on the skin) and look at it under the microscope. They can then determine if we have infection present and treat appropriately.

This looks like a skin rash and possible skin infection due to the yellow crusting. It doesn't appear life threatening if this is just a skin rash as suspected. Skin rashes are often caused by allergies, trauma to the skin and fleas. I would recommend scheduling an appt with your local veterinarian who can do some skin testing of the area to determine what kind of infection it is, so that the most effective treatment is recommended to take care of this. That spot on Baby could be several things including allergies, skin mites, flea bites, ringworm (which humans can get) or a bacterial infection. With the description of swelling, I recommend to have her examined. She likely needs antibiotics. At home, a few things that may help maintain healthy skin are adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs. You may also try changing her diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. Protect the area from licking or scratching, she may need to wear an elizabethan collar. This could be due to a bacterial or fungal infection. They can both look like this. It could also be due to something that is irritating the skin like mites, fleas, or allergies. It does not appear like ringworm, but it's impossible to know for sure without testing it. The species of fungus involved in toenail infections is different than ringworm and toenail fungus is not very contagious to dogs. This looks rather mild right now. The best thing to do is have the lesion evaluated by a veterinarian to help identify the cause. However, it would be fine to give a bath with a medicated dog shampoo (can find this at the pet store) in the meantime. If that's helpful, this can be repeated weekly until the problem resolves. This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking (if any).

I would recommend that a veterinarian examine the area so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Oh my. Poor Chillidog. This appears to be a really bad bacterial infection and not a yeast infection in my professional opinion. Perhaps even a Staphylococcus infection. You should request from your vet to have a culture done of the skin so that you know what antibiotic will resolve this. And because if your pets age, a look at underlying causes is highly recommmended if there was no trauma to he skin hat may have caused this. The infection appears deep so I actually would not recommend continuing the topical antibiotic if this were my patient. Oral antibiotics are a must! I also would recommend an Elizabethan collar to prevent any licking or chewing, which will only make this worse. I really hope you can get a handle on Chillidogs skin infection quickly. Best of luck.
