My senior dog has a skin infection. Is it yeast? What should I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 15 years and 4 months old | 14 lbs

My dog has been to the vet and was first prescribed a shampoo. O was told he has a fungus. Today he was prescribed Quadritop to put on once a day. Is this yeast? Is there anything else I can do. He is 15 years old and on heart meds.

Oh my. Poor Chillidog. This appears to be a really bad bacterial infection and not a yeast infection in my professional opinion. Perhaps even a Staphylococcus infection. You should request from your vet to have a culture done of the skin so that you know what antibiotic will resolve this. And because if your pets age, a look at underlying causes is highly recommmended if there was no trauma to he skin hat may have caused this. The infection appears deep so I actually would not recommend continuing the topical antibiotic if this were my patient. Oral antibiotics are a must! I also would recommend an Elizabethan collar to prevent any licking or chewing, which will only make this worse. I really hope you can get a handle on Chillidogs skin infection quickly. You can try to use a medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine twice weekly for 2 weeks. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. It may be the picture but I am concerned that there may be also a lump as well. If that is the case, that should be evaluated to know if it is actually a growth. Good luck and have a good night!

You can give him a bath in a medicated shampoo that can help. If there are sores then you can apply neosporin to them. The odor may be from a secodnary yeast infection. At her age I would have yiurbvrt check her thyroid ton make sure it is not low as it can predispose them to more skin infections. From there they can prescribe medicine to treat her

I would recommend starting an oral anti-fungal therapy as well as treatment with Apoquel for allergies which is most likely the primary cause of this problem, both medications are prescription only that you can get from your vet.

My dog's severe skin infection won't heal with vet meds; what now?

Oh my. Poor guy. This infection is severe. I would have cultures taken of this skin immediately if the broad spectrum antibiotics that your vet gave aren't working. I would also consider getting biopsies of this thing. The area may need surgical debridement as well, because there is some diseased and necrotic (dead) tissue there that will prevent this from healing well if it isn't removed. I am so sorry your pet has such an aggressive skin condition. This certainly will need further medical management from your vet for sure. With the suggestions above, you should be able to get a better handle on this thing. Best of luck and take care!

Monistat is not likely to help in this case, you will need either a medicated shampoo to treat yeast infection or an oral antifungal medication, these are prescription only and you will need to take her to the vet in order to get them.

This could be an allergic reaction, a skin infection (bacterial or yeast) or even a skin tumor. You should have it examined by your veterinarian, as it is not possible to distinguish these by just looking at a photo. An bacterial skin infection can usually be treated with antibiotics , a fungal infection (yeast) with a fungicidal medicine. To identify a tumor, your vet may want to do a fine needle aspirate (he takes some material from the area in question with a needle and then looks at it under the microscope) to determine whether this is concerning.

My dog has a bad yeasty smell and skin issues. What should I do?

If you are observing skin lesions and an odor he may have both a bacterial and yeast infection. While some cases can be treated topically and with medicated shampoos, more severe cases often requires oral antibiotic and antifungal therapy. As a first line therapy, start with a medicated shampoo that can be used for both yeast and bacterial infections such as Malaseb or Virbac or products recommended by your veterinarian. Additionally, it is important to make sure he is on a monthly flea prevention as many pets are sensitive to fleas. If this is secondary to allergies or what we refer to as atopy, he may require additional therapy including an allergy vaccine.
