My dog has a spot on his back foot. Is it from licking or serious?

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | 53 lbs

My dog has this spot on his back foot and it is worrying me. I'm not sure if this could be from licking or something more serious? I plan on taking him to the vet but just wanted some advice or maybe if you know what it is

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. From your pictures the affected area you are concerned about looks similar to a small lick granuloma (sore from licking). As this is not an emergency it is ok to wait for your vet to look at this. If it looks as if it is swelling or discharging I would get him in sooner. If you want to keep the are clean, you can use saline to gently cleanse the area. I hope this helps! Please feel free to contact me with any further questions or concerns you may have. Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. It appears as though it could be a lick granuloma, a chronic granuloma that Ruger has been licking for a while now. These are benign but can persist for a very long time, if not for the life of the animal. You can have these removed, but unfortunately these typically develop in areas where there is not much skin to close after removing the lesion. You could biopsy this area to ensure this is not cancer and just manage this with topical ointments and pain medications. I would discuss further options with your veterinarian.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. I do recommend that he sees a veterinarian. The bump looks very raw. He may need an antibiotic or a topical cleansing solution to help it heal. He could have a small cut that has gotten infected or even have a mass that has grown there. Do not let him lick the area. Place an E-collar on him if necessary. I hope this information helps!

Hello, thank you for your question about Baxter. Based on your description and the photo provided I believe that Baxter can wait until Monday to be seen by a veterinarian. In the meantime I would try to prevent him from licking at the area and try to keep it as clean as possible. If you have one you can use an e-collar to prevent him from getting at the area. Alternatively you could cover his foot with a sock (if you use this method try to keep the sock clean and dry, it may need to be changed). Additionally when Baxter goes outside I would recommend covering his foot (especially if the ground is wet) to prevent dirt and debris from getting to the area. You can use a plastic shopping bag or a bootie for this purpose. I would recommend scheduling an appointment with your veterinarian on Monday so that they can examine the area and determine if it is infected/irritated and prescribe Baxter any medications that they feel are warranted. My dog is licking his paw and has a sore spot. When should I see a vet?

Ouch! That does look like a bit of a sore spot. If you have an appointment already scheduled, I would just place an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Bentley to prevent him from continuing to lick the food as licking it can make the spot worse and introduce bacteria/cause an infection in an already inflamed wound. Keeping the sore spot clean and dry with the use of a washcloth is also a good idea until your appointment. If you do see any rapid changes in size, it starts oozing debris badly, or it is painful enough that Bentley can't walk on it, then trying to get in for an appointment sooner is best.

Why is my dog licking a red spot on his paw? What could it be?

Hello, and thank you for using PetCoach. I’m seeing a red, round, raised, hairless mass. This appearance would make me primarily suspicious of either a [histiocytoma](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/histiocytoma/) or a [mast cell tumor](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/mast-cell-tumors/). The only way to tell for sure what this lump is, is via cytology. Your vet will get a small sample of cells with a needle and examine them under a microscope to determine what the mass is. I definitely recommend having this done as soon as possible. A histiocytoma is a benign mass that tends to spontaneously resolve. A mast cell tumor would be a concern, and should be surgically removed as soon as possible. I hope this helps!

My dog licks his paw raw, causing open sores. What is it and how to help?

Based on the picture it could either be something called acral lick granuloma it it could be some sort of tumor. Acral lick granulomas are deep infections that usually require oral antiantibiotics and sometimes steroids and you have to break the lick cycle. I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. Once there is a diagnosis you can make a treatment plan. My puppy keeps licking her paw. Is it infected or injured?

Poor girl. This looks like a little abrasion. I would just make sure there is no swelling since it it hard to tell from the photo. Look at the other leg for comparison. If there is no swelling present, then you can simply clean this area with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water and then let it air dry and apply some "hot spot" spray from your local pet store. My dog keeps licking his leg. Is it obsessive or a lick granuloma?

Hi, from your picture it appears your dog is getting an lick granuloma. It will help to use hair clippers and trim the hair around the area to look for sores and redness. Some dogs will do this compulsively, or he may have a small bite or scratch. You can cover the area with a breathable baby sock, making sure it is not secure too tightly. Or keep the cone on for about 3 days to see it the area heals on it's own. Good luck, I hope this helps!

My dog has a growth on his paw. He's licking and limping. What is it?

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. This looks to be a histiocytoma tumor which is a benign tumor commonly found on the limbs and face of dogs. It is a benign tumor that usually will regress on its own within a few weeks/months with no treatment. Of course, I am just guessing. It is impossible to diagnose these things via the internet with just a photo. Here is an information sheet about histiocytomas in dogs for you to read.
