My dog licks his paw raw, causing open sores. What is it and how to help?

My dog, Max, has been getting these weird open spots where there’s no fur and over time they get bigger and I’ve heard it from him licking his paws so we try to watch him and tell him no when he does but we all are busy during the day and when we see clear stuff or puss come out of it then we a spray we got to help wounds and infections oh animals then we take a Cotton ball or gaze pad and tape his paw, but then he ends up licking it and it comes off. What is it and what can we do to help it?

Based on the picture it could either be something called acral lick granuloma it it could be some sort of tumor. Acral lick granulomas are deep infections that usually require oral antiantibiotics and sometimes steroids and you have to break the lick cycle. I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. Once there is a diagnosis you can make a treatment plan. Hi Kristi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear that Hooch is having problems. Most skin problems especially in this area are caused by external parasites mostly fleas but could be ticks, mites etc. Sounds like there may be a bacterial infection starting but would need pictures to evaluate that. Bacterial infections can break out on their own or be caused by parasites like mentioned above, allergies to things in the air or contact, irritation to things in the environment (contact directly to the skin), among other things. If these areas/sores do not resolve or he continues to lick them I would advise letting your veterinarian see Hooch to determine what is going on. After a physical exam, your vet may just advise treatment including good external parasite control (flea/tick products) or they may advise testing to further explore the problem. I hope Hooch gets better soon. Remember we are approaching the height of the flea season right before the fall season. Good luck and keep a good flea/tick product on him as advised by your vet.

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Why does my dog have recurring paw sores and won't stop licking?

Sores on the paws can occurr for many reasons. If it is a chronic issue, underlying allergies or a thyroid disorder are likely the issue. These conditions weaken the skin’s natural defenses and allow bacteria and yeast to set up opportunistic infections. The photo of Sammy‘s foot shows a round, pink lesion. It almost looks like some sort of a mass from the picture. I recommend to have Sammy visit his veterinarian to check that area out. If it is a mass, it should be aspirated as skin masses that look this way are suspicious for a cancerous skin growth called a mast cell tumor. However there are benign skin masses that look very similar as well. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Why is my dog licking paws & has a yellow sore near his genitals?

It looks like Roscoe likely has a skin infection in his inguinal area as well as on his foot. The licking may be caused initially from allergies, but it sure looks like it had advanced into an infection by what I see in the picture. I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. In the meantime bathing in an antimicrobial shampoo such as chlorhexidine or salicylic acid is appropriate. These can be found in the human shampoo aisle in the dandruff area. My dog's paw is raw and inflamed from licking. What to do before vet?

There is nothing you can do other than keep your dog from licking the lesion so it does not get worse. This looks like a nasty hot spot, but only a hands-on exam can determine what this is and how it is to be treated. Please schedule a recheck with your veterinarian.

My dog has a spot on his back foot. Is it from licking or serious?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. From your pictures the affected area you are concerned about looks similar to a small lick granuloma (sore from licking). As this is not an emergency it is ok to wait for your vet to look at this. If it looks as if it is swelling or discharging I would get him in sooner. My dog constantly licks her leg raw. What should I do or see a vet?

Hi there! Thanks for using PerCoach! If this is the only place she has been licking, this is likely a lick granuloma in the early stages. This is basically a skin wound that is created by self-trauma. It will take a full examination by a veterinarian to rule out other things though this seems the most likely. Tha main thing is finding out what is triggering this. Sometimes it is behavioral or due to stress and sometimes it is medical in nature such as due to allergies. I recommend that you have Jackie evaluated by your veterinarian to confirm this and to start management for it which often times involves placing an e-collar to avoid more self-trauma, start therapy for the possible inciting cause like allergies, antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. In the meantime, you could consider getting an e-collar to avoid self-trauma while you have her evaluated. Good luck!

My dog keeps licking his leg. Is it obsessive or a lick granuloma?

Hi, from your picture it appears your dog is getting an lick granuloma. It will help to use hair clippers and trim the hair around the area to look for sores and redness. Some dogs will do this compulsively, or he may have a small bite or scratch. You can cover the area with a breathable baby sock, making sure it is not secure too tightly. Or keep the cone on for about 3 days to see it the area heals on it's own. Good luck, I hope this helps!
