My dog's split nail looks healed but hurts. Which part to trim?

Now this is likely going to continue to improve slowly but it will take time to do so. If he appears to be painful, it would be best to go to a veterinarian as they can proceed to cut the rest of the nail so it heals quicker and also send him home on pain control medications. When humans or dogs rip off their nails there is a possibility they can grow back abnormally or when he tore it in may not all of the old nail came off and part of it is still there. I would have your Vet take a look. If there is old nail still present he may need to be sedated to trim that away so the new nail can grow in appropriately. Good luck!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! What you are describing is the normal quick or blood supply of the nail which is again not abnormal and nothing needs to be done. She does need a nail trim which you can do with your groomer or veterinarian at your earliest convenience. Best of luck!

Hello. The nail has indeed split & what you are seeing is the fleshy quick of the nail. My remedy is to snip off the hanging part of the nail & bandage the foot for a few days to protect the sensitive quick until it begins to heal. The new claw is probably the cuticle which is inside the nail. This is quite painful. I would trim the toenail where it’s broken. If it’s at the cuticle it may bleed. Since it is not actively bleeding you can trim the nail yourself. It doesn't look that bad but you need to cut off the top part that is "hanging" or it will catch on things and could potentially cause more damage and pain to her. When you trim it, it may bleed so if you are not prepared for that at home then you should have your vet do it. A groomer may not be comfortable doing this but you can ask them. That is what is known as the quik of the nail. It the sensitive portion that contains the nerves and blood supply. The nail have been broken and the protective shell has been separated from the quik. It is painful and can bleed a lot. Typically they have to be sedated and have the quick trimmed back so it will not be exposed further and be painful to allow the nail to regrow.
