Dog spit out Doxycycline. How to give the next dose correctly?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The maximum dose of doxycycline is 10mg/kg twice daily (or 20mg/kg/day). If you gave Chylo around 33-35mg that is 20mg/kg and he should be fine. Do not give him any more for 24 hours. Doxycycline is very hard on the stomach so he may have vomiting. Yes in two hours the tablet should have been absorbed and dissolved already. This medication must be given with food and water as well as can cause oesophageal inflammation. I would suggest to wait until next dosage and I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. It is normally fine to adjust the dosing schedule by two hours or so as needed. However, I legally cannot reccomend a change in medication, without having established a client-doctor relationship with you. I will have to refer you to your vet to answer this question. If you mean you have only been giving it once daily instead of twice daily then go ahead and give your pm dose tonight and tomorrow start your twice a day dosing as per the label (1 with breakfast and 1 with dinner). Just make sure you give with food as doxycycline can cause tummy upset. It is okay you have only missed a few days and will get back on track tomorrow. I recommend calling your vet to make sure that the total dosage is correct and that Uzzi is still receiving the correct amount per dose. You should also let your vet know of any side effects you are seeing as they may consider a shorter course, changing antibiotics, or adding probiotics.
