My dog had a spay complication. Is it safe to spay her later?

So sorry to hear that Aubree is having this issue. I would recommend you get a second opinion with a veterinary cardiologist. There are many heart issues where the dog can have the spay surgery safely. Your vet may not be comfortable performing the surgery but a specialist may. Injections prior to surgery can be given under the skin, in the muscle or directly into the vein. So the location of her injection is not as worrisome as the bleeding afterwards. I am glad the her clotting times were ok. She should have a CBC checked as well and potentially be screened for a disorder known as Von Willebrand disease. If these tests are all normal, then you can proceed with her spay. As far as being groggy, different drug doses may be recommended prior to her next procedure. Some dogs are more sensitive to others to drugs and that cannot be predicted ahead of time. A note in her file can be made though. I hope this information helps! I do not suspect she will have any longterm damage from the incident.

She would need to be thoroughly examined by a vet. Most dogs that are otherwise stable (as in living day to day without any issues) can undergo anesthesia without complications. The vet may want to take a few extra precautions if they have concern that she could regurgitate during or after anesthesia.

Hello. I am so sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, it sounds like more was going on with your pet than abnormal heat cycles, & it was just poor veterinary care that she woke up in the middle of surgery & needed to be sedated again. Stress & pain may have contributed to her death, but there may have been some other underlying heart disease or cancer present that was just too much for her to recover from. Please accept my condolences on your loss.

Only her vet can determine if it's safe to spay Lucky or not. There are senior dogs that can have surgery safely, but heart problems add an additional risk. Speak to her vet about the risks. I hope this helps.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, it is fine to spay a 6 year old dog. It is the best way to prevent further pregnancy and to prevent an infected uterus (pyometra) which is life threatening. The only negative at this age is that the surgery will be more difficult and she is at a bit of a higher risk for bleeding. I would also be sure your Vet does a good exam and gets blood work before surgery to be sure she is healthy. It will also take her a bit longer than a young dog to recover. She will likely be acting like herself with in 3 days but will be fully recovered at 2 weeks like younger dogs. I wish you the best!

That decision is up to you. Certainly if it is not safe to have Lucy spayed, you must consider that. If it is not safe to spay her, you should keep her away from males every time she comes in heat. You will also want to watch her very closely for signs of a uterine infection and mammary cancer. You may also look for a vet who can provide a safer operation.
