My dog had a bad pre-spay injection reaction. Any long-term damage?

I couldn't give you an accurate answer without knowing what went wrong exactly, i have a feeling she had a bad reaction to one of the sedatives, this of course can happen and if this is the case a different sedative should be used next time. if your vet suspects a heart problem he should refer you to a vet cardiologist first. age wise she is fine to have the operation done, but because there was a serious complication you definitely need to wait several months if you do decide to put her through surgery again.

Poor Stella! Unfortunately one of the potential risks of a bitch spay is that they may have a haemorrhage. It is rare nowadays but can still happen. There is a blood supply straight off the aorta to the ovaries being removed. Often underlying conditions such as bleeding disorders make this more likely, or in Stella's case the fact that she reacted to the sutures could have contributed. I'm really sorry this happened and I'm sure your vet did everything they could. From what you say I doubt she felt any pain.

I wonder if Luna had an underlying condition where she was unable to metabolize drugs and anesthesia. She could have had a genetic liver shunt (porto-systemic shunt) or an MDR reception issue. This is a very abnormal response to a spay and I am very sorry that you went though this and poor Luna. Did you request a necropsy with your Vet to see if anything could be found? While it is a routine surgery, complications like bleeding can occur. There is a chance that your friend's pet will be OK, she may require a blood transfusion if her anemia (level of red blood cells) is low enough. She may also just need time for her own body to make more red blood cells. There are lots of patients in critical care units that have lost a lot of blood that are able to be nursed back to health. Hi there. Different individuals can respond to anesthesia differently, just like humans. In my experience, it's not uncommon for some pets to be wobbly, confused, or otherwise "out of it" for up to 24 hours or so after an anesthetic event. As long as she's responsive and doesn't seem to be getting worse, this is likely normal. If she's still shaky and crying by tomorrow morning, I would recommend giving your vet a call as she may be painful and need some additional medication to help with this. For tonight, you can sit and snuggle with her if she seems to want this, or leave her alone if she doesn't want to be touched. Make sure she has food and water available if she wants it. Monitor for any bleeding from the incision site, pale gums, or increased weakness or acting less responsive, as these could indicate a more serious problem that needs an ER visit.

I am so sorry to hear that Francis isn’t feeling well. I would be suspicious of tick born infections such as ehrlichia. She could have been infected for some time, but the stress of the surgery could have caused her to become ill with it. It is also possible that she is having a rare complication to surgery such as an infection at the uterine stump. Another possible cause is that she is experiencing an immune mediated anemia and thrombocytopenia event. If she is genetically predisposed then anything can trigger it- surgery, vaccinations, infections etc. I would recommend asking for a clinical pathology review of the CBC, the total protein level can help determine if she has bled. I don’t have a great explanation for the neurological signs but the bleeding certainly makes me think she has an underlying bleeding disorder. Low platelets? Rat poison? We have some tick-born illnesses here that can lower platelets. Auto immune thrombocytopenia? Perhaps there was a clotting event related to this in the brain that caused the neuro signs?
