Dog spay incision: Can I use a band-aid if the cone comes off?

Hi, if you are able to pass two fingers between the bandage and the neck, the bandage is lose enough. If you remove the bandage completely or make it too lose Lily will be able to take the cone off and then she might lick her wound. I would recommend to loosen it slightly f you are unable to pass two fingers between the neck and the bandage. You could change the plastic collar to an inflatable one, I would recommend to do it tomorrow morning so that you have any issues you can always pop Lily into your vet and get help placing the collar back ! She looks quite cheeky and smart ! Hope this helps !

That looks fine for the stage it's at. Rather than cover the wound with a bandage, I would put an e-collar or an inflatable collar on him that will keep him from licking at it, unless he's getting to it with his hind claws. In that case you can put baby socks on his hind feet to keep his claws from getting into the staples. If you do keep it covered, change the bandage daily or twice daily if the wound oozes a bit.

NO, a cone is the best way to prevent licking of the incision. Most pets will adjust to the cone within 48 hours. You may also call your vet today and ask about a sedative for Chewy. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

As long as there is no heat, swelling or discharge it should be ok. There is a doughnut collar that may work- it blows up around the neck. A shirt would work too. One of those should help you out. While the antibiotics should prevent a real nasty infection from progressing, I would also recommend gently cleaning the area with dilute betadine and warm water. Add a couple of tablespoons of the betadine into 1/2 cup of warm water, & clean off any serum that has accumulated around the incision. Do not scrub the incision. Dry the area, & you can wrap her abdomen using an absorbant pad & either vetwrap or coban. Most general pharmacies will have all this. You can also place an infant t-shirt on her, tying up the bottom to cinch her just in front of the hindlegs. Keep the cone on, & clean the wound several times a day. If it is not healing or the discharge increases or changes in any way, see your vet immediately. Good luck with her, she should be fine in 7-10 days.
