My dog is sore and licking his leg after playing. Should I see a vet?

If Sonnie has been limping for 2 weeks, then it is time to see your vet to see what is going on. Often when dogs have the adrenaline rush of being outside and running, they will limp less than when they are walking slowly inside, so that is not unusual. Poor pup! She could could have torn her cranial cruciate ligament in her knee or done damage to the meniscus in her knee. It's concerning that she has been limping on three legs for four days now, and it's time to see a vet. Rest her tonight, no running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a lead only, and bring her right back in when she's one. Have her seen by a vet first thing in the morning for a lameness exam and x-rays.

No, this isn't normal, and Oliver could have strained a ligament or even torn a ligament in his leg causing him the pain when he plays really hard. I would have him seen by a vet for a physical exam, lameness exam, and x-rays. Using these tests, the vet can diagnose what is causing his pain and can discuss treatment options with you.

Its possible that the leg may still be bothering Michael a little or it may be unrelated. I would recommend strict rest for the next 3 days (no walks, running or jumping), if he is still lame go ahead an take him to the vet. If he is getting worse at any point, go ahead and take him to the vet. You may opt to go ahead and have him seen to get pain medications as well since this is the fastest way to relive any pain. I would watch Rukis for 24 hours. If you notice any swelling or if he is still limping tomorrow, it is a good idea to get him seen by the vet. I have seen dogs not act painful with broken legs. It could also be muscle sprain or a torn ligament causing him to limp. Try to keep him confined for at least 24 hours so that he can rest whatever it is that is causing the limp. If you find a sore spot, you can use an ice pack wrapped in a towel for 15 minutes at a time, and use gently massage on the area as he will allow. Unfortunately no human OTC medications are safe for use in dogs.

A veterinarian will also be able to make Gab comfortable by providing pain relief medication. The vet may also perform an orthopaedic exam and an X-ray. If Gab seems very uncomfortable or depressed, you suspect a broken bone, the limb is dangling at an unnatural angle, a limb is being dragged, severe swelling is occurring, the limb is hot, bone is piercing the skin, or nonstop bleeding is occurring, Gab needs to see a veterinarian immediately. If none of the above are occurring, and due to the high frequency of injury or trauma cases in limping dogs, you can try conservative management at home for 24 hours to see if Gab improves.
