My dog has a sore on its foot. What could it be and how to treat it?

Hi there. This looks like a histiocytoma. If it is, it should regress (go away on it's own) within a month or two. I would not be overly worried about this right now. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is difficult to know without being able to examine her. This could be a benign or malignant growth. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. It does look like a mass from the photo. A histocytoma is possible but other masses can look identical like a plasmacytoma or a Mast Cell tumor. A foreign body stuck in the skin can also look like this. I recommend to have Leo checked out. Because Mast Cell tumors are cancerous, it’s best to know for sure what that is on Leo’s foot. The veterinarian may aspirate the mass he get the diagnosis. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

If Nova is two years or younger, this could be a histiocytoma - a benign tumor that is usually on the front half of the body. They usually go away on their own without treatment. This could also be a wart, or less likely a more malignant tumor. Just to be safe, take Nova to the vet to get a for-sure diagnosis. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and Nova!

They often develop these types of lesions due to an infection under the skin. In this location, I would be suspicious of something like a thorn stuck under the skin. However, it's possible that this is a tumor, or cyst. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done for this at home. A vet will need to inspect and explore this lesion in order to determine the cause and provide the correct treatment. This may require minor surgery. For now, it may be helpful to soak the foot a warm water bath with epsom salts for 15 minutes twice a day. Be careful not to let Dexter drink any water with epsom salts, because this can cause vomiting and diarrhea. I hope that helps and Dexter gets better soon.

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. This looks to be a histiocytoma tumor which is a benign tumor commonly found on the limbs and face of dogs. It is a benign tumor that usually will regress on its own within a few weeks/months with no treatment. Of course, I am just guessing.
