My new rescue dog has solid and runny poop. Could it be worms?

I am sorry to hear about Jo! Being that she was from a shelter it is quite possible she has GI parasites, which could be worms or protozoa like Giardia or Coccidia. I would recommend bringing Jo and a stool sample in to the vet for an exam. In the meantime you can start a probiotic for dogs (available at pet stores and vet offices and online) which can sometimes help.

It could be worms so you may want to consider deworming them all. Most dogs that have worms have no symptoms. Without doing a fecal test with your vet there is not going to be a way to know for sure. It will not hurt to go ahead and deworm them even if they have no worms. Just keep in mind that a general deworm is just that, general. It will not kill every type of worms that they could possibly have. Only the most common ones. This will help give them "good bacteria" to help with digestion. Ol Roy is probably my least favorite diet for dogs. The Pedigree diet is OK but again, not the best. If you could afford a better diet I would recommend you do that. I would suggest one of the Purina diets: ProPlan, Purine One or even Dog Chow. If you do change diets, do it slowly over a week's time as to not cause any more GI upset. Hope this helps. If the diarrhoea does not improve with dietary change (boiled chicken and rice) a check up would be required as it can be caused by an inflammation/infection of the gastrointestinal system and antibiotics may be required. It is very common for dogs to have some GI upset when first being adopted. It is usually a combination of the stress of adjusting to a new environment and a change in food. I think the ingredients in this product look good and you could start those right away. I would also recommend giving a combination of plain white rice and boiled chicken for a few days. This is a bland diet and easy to digest. Once the signs have improved, you can start to transition Coal from the chicken and rice to the diet you want him on permanently. Congratulations on the new girl! This is possibly nothing but stress from all the new changes in her life. Stress colitis (diarrhea from stress) is a very real phenomenon and she may not have eaten/been drinking well in the last couple days due to the transition. If she is otherwise bright and normal looking, give it 48 hours. Try a probiotic like purina fortiflora and a bland diet (half plain boiled/canned chicken half plain cooked white rice) for a few days and I expect the diarrhea to improve after 1-3 days. (Then transition back to her regular diet slowly over 3-5 days.) If at ANY time she is lethargic, vomiting, not wanting to eat, or you have other concerns, you need to go to the vet clinic right away to make sure it’s nothing more serious. There is probably a bigger problem going on than just a sensitive stomach. Just changing to a new diet is not likely going to be the answer. Has a fecal test been done to rule out any intestinal parasites? Even if he has been "dewormed" there is no dewormer that will treat every possible type of parasite. Many parasites (like protozoan parasites) need a special dewormer. That is where I would start. Other things that can cause excessive stool production are: * inflammatory bowel disease * motility disorder * pancreatic disease * kidney disease * liver disease * neoplasia (cancer) In the meantime you can start him on a probiotic - this won't hurt and it may help. You can use any probiotic made for dogs (not human products) but my favorite is Fortiflora. I am unsure if it is available in your country. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Unfortunately we have. I would highly recommend placing Echo on probiotics (i.e. Advita, Fortiflora, or Proviable) for roughly 2-4 weeks, adding 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the Pie filling) in his food daily, Purina EN Gastrointestinal food can be tried, and then consider having the stool rechecked through your veterinarian. Oftentimes if a pet has many worms they need multiple dewormings to get things to return to normal. I would try those suggestions first and see how Echo responds. If the stools still have not resolved after 2-4 weeks, then consider treating Echo with a long term antibiotic (i.e. Tylan powder) to treat for suspected inflammatory bowel disease.
