My dog's poop is discolored and soft. Is it worms or dog food?

These irregular stools can be from parasites (worms) but you really need to know what type of worms you are treating before giving a dewormer. Not every deworming product treats every type of worm. You can try a general dewormer but I don't know if it will help. It is best to have a fecal sample tested by your vet. Your vet can give you the best idea of a proper deworming schedule based on where you live and your dog's lifestyle. A dog that goes out hiking/running, etc and is around a lot of other dogs needs more frequent deworming than a dog that never leaves it's house/yard. In the meantime, I would suggest you start her on a probiotic. I recommend this one called Fortiflora although you can use any probiotic product made for dogs. This is an assumption of worms because of the color change, but a simple bacterial infection can also cause a change in the color of the poop. At any rate you can try giving Roscoe a broad spectrum dewormer such as Fenbendazole, which covers hookworms, roundworms and whipworms. Visit your local pet store or feed store to see what is available in your area. Hopefully things get better within the next week or so. You can also add a probiotic like Culturelle (over the counter) in his food daily to help with any bacterial imbalance which is suggested because of the blood you are seeing in the stool. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Personally the color doesn't bother me but the consistency does. That is diarrhea. It is too soft and not formed. I would go back to the Royal Canin food as it sounds like he digests that one better. Be sure though that he has had his stool tested for intestinal parasites and is up to date on his DHPP vaccines. He could have colitis secondary to something he ate. You could feed him a bland diet of chicken breast and white rice for a few days and see if that helps. You could also add a probiotic to his diet, like Fortiflora or Proviable. If the abnormal stools continue then he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat. Your vet can run a fecal test to make sure he doesn't have a parasite.

This is very concerning as it appears to contain blood, mucus and possibly bowel lining. I recommend an oral worm medication, a specialist intestinal or hydrolyzed diet for 6 weeks and a probiotic/fiber supplement such as fortiflora to rebalance the bowel and rule out any parasitic causes. A full health check, blood tests and possibly ultrasound/xray if not responding or any weight loss, vomiting or weakness is noted

Hi there! Although dogs can get diarrhea from worms, there are other reasons why, including bacterial infections, or even dietary indiscretion (eating something out of the ordinary that they shouldn't), that can cause it. From the description of the mucous, it could very well be colitis - or inflammation of the colon or large bowel. Also, fleas carry tapeworms, so sometimes the over the counter de-wormers don't take care of those. You can try a fast of 12 hours of no food, and very little water. After that period of time, 1/3-1/2 of their normal portion of food in the form of boiled or steamed lean protein such as chicken breast or ground turkey (no sauce or seasoninng) can be introduced. If the diarrhea seems like it's improving, or it stops, every 12 hours you can increase the portion little by little until it's back to the normal portion of food. If the diarrhea is not improving, both dogs should be evaluated by their veterinarian. It is important to make sure that the dogs are not getting too dehydrated from the diarrhea (as even though they may be drinking, they lose way more fluid than they can take in sometimes with diarrhea). The veterinarian can also give them some medications to help with the diarrhea, like, for example, some antibiotics to help re-balance the bacterial populations in the gut. At any time, if vomiting starts in addition to the diarrhea, I always advise to have the pet(s) evaluated immediately, because this can indicate an intestinal blockage, or a severe gastrointestinal infection or diffuse inflammation. All of those issues need to be addressed immediately. If the diarrhea does improve with the bland diet, I always advise to feed it until there is 48-72 hours of normal, solid stools. Then, you can transition the dogs back to their normal diet, gradually, over the course of 5-7 days (as switching too quickly can actually cause diarrhea). Soft poops in dogs can be caused by intestinal worms, which are common in puppies. I would take take Tyson into the vet along with a fecal sample. The vet can confirm he does have worms and can give him a deworming treatment such as Drontal. I would take him into the vet either today or this weekend. As for the beef mince, it's not needed in his diet. Royal Canin is an excellent food, and it will provide all the nutrients he needs to grow and be healthy. Adding the mince is adding extra calories he doesn't need, it's also fatty and too fatty foods can lead to pancreatitis. I would avoid giving that to him. As an occasional treat, you can give him some boiled white meat chicken (no bones). Good luck, I hope this helps!
