Why is my beagle's sensitive stomach causing loose, smelly, frequent poop?

If he is a young dog it is possible that he has a mild food allergy or an easily upset stomach (sometimes this is irritable bowl syndrome). Typically strong smelling gas in from the diet. I think slowly switching Ziggys food to maybe a different protein source of purina would help calm down or stop the gas. However, if you want to try an over the counter probiotic every day in the food and see if helping the good bacteria grow improved the gas. Do not forget to have a fecal checked for parasites just incase! hope that helps

Unfortunately we have. I would highly recommend placing Echo on probiotics (i.e. Advita, Fortiflora, or Proviable) for roughly 2-4 weeks, adding 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the Pie filling) in his food daily, Purina EN Gastrointestinal food can be tried, and then consider having the stool rechecked through your veterinarian. Oftentimes if a pet has many worms they need multiple dewormings to get things to return to normal. I would try those suggestions first and see how Echo responds. If the stools still have not resolved after 2-4 weeks, then consider treating Echo with a long term antibiotic (i.e. Tylan powder) to treat for suspected inflammatory bowel disease. These irregular stools can be from parasites (worms) but you really need to know what type of worms you are treating before giving a dewormer. Not every deworming product treats every type of worm. You can try a general dewormer but I don't know if it will help. It is best to have a fecal sample tested by your vet. Your vet can give you the best idea of a proper deworming schedule based on where you live and your dog's lifestyle. A dog that goes out hiking/running, etc and is around a lot of other dogs needs more frequent deworming than a dog that never leaves it's house/yard. In the meantime, I would suggest you start her on a probiotic. I recommend this one called Fortiflora although you can use any probiotic product made for dogs. It depends on the cause of the diarrhea. He could have intestinal worms, a food intolerance, in issue called Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI) in which the pancreas doesn't make digestive enzymes. You'll need to start with a vet visit to rule out parasites and try to get his gut settled down. You could also run bloodwork to check for EPI, however we generally wait to see if other methods get the diarrhea under control first. Good luck! I know this is a frustrating issue

Max may have chronic diarrhea related to several issues including GI parasites, food sensitivities, or internal medical issues like inflammatory bowel disease. I'd recommend having him examined by your veterinarian and having a stool sample checked out. It would also be a good idea to try a higher quality food like Royal Canin Sensitive stomach. You can also feed a bland diet of boiled chicken and sweet potato or rice for a couple days to see if this helps. Often times a good sensitivity will develop later in life so Max may need a diet change to resolve the issue. Poor Dylan! If he has a sensitive stomach and gets diarrhea easily, he may benefit from a prescription GI diet that is bland and easy to digest, or a hypoallergenic limited ingredient diet such as Hills z/d or Purina HA - I would suggest talking to your vet about these options to see if he/she feels that they might be helpful. It's also possible that Dylan has some other underlying medical issue causing the recurring diarrhea, such as intestinal parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, Addison's disease, etc. I would recommend having a full check-up done by your vet if this hasn't been done in the past - he/she can do blood work or other testing if needed to check for these problems and get him started on appropriate treatment if needed.

The first thing I would make sure you do is have his stool tested by your veterinarian to rule out a bacterial or parasitic infection that could be causing his stool be loose. If your veterinarian does not suspect a health issue as a cause, then you may want to try changing the food to a sensitive stomach formula such as Hill's Adult Sensitive Stomach food you can find over the counter at your local pet supplies store. Adding extra fiber to the diet can also help firm up the stool a bit. You can try adding 1/4 cup of plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) to his food twice daily.
