My dog has a soft, growing white patch on his penis. What is it?

Pictures can be deceiving but the areas do not appear raised or thickened from inflammation, if they are indeed as flat and smooth as the surrounding skin i would not be concerned but would monitor for any further increase in size or number, regular photos can help to monitor. sk your vet to check sat your next wellness or vaccine appointment but depigmented spots are quite common and innocent

Causes of skin disease in a young puppy can be due to a bacterial or yeast skin infection, ringworm (fungus) or demodex (non-contagious mite). Puppy pyoderma (skin infection) is common on the belly of young puppies and they tend to out grow it. I would have your Vet examine your dog and then prescribe medications. I hope this helps!

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. This could be a bacterial skin infection. If any urine gets trapped on his fur or any moisture, this can predispose them to infection. I would recommend using a spray such as malacetic conditioning spray and apply to the area until resolved. If it does not resolve, I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at him so that the most appropriate treatment can be administered. I hope this helps! I am sorry to hear about Michief. It is possible he could have vitiligo, which causes a loss of pigmentation of the skin/fur in dogs. Sometimes this can appear as a small patch, and sometimes can be over larger areas. Dachshunds are a breed we see with this condition. It can sometimes result from a stressful event, and occasionally due to an autoimmune condition. I would recommend bringing him in for his vet to examine him to determine if this is what is happening with Michief. Best of luck to you!

It's tough to say exactly what's causing Pablo's patch of hair loss from a picture alone. I agree that I don't see any redness, scaling or signs of inflammation in the picture. Some possible causes can include scar tissue from an injury or burn, infectious conditions like mange or ringworm, a sebaceous (oil gland) cyst or histiocytoma. Pablo should be examined by his vet so that diagnostic testing can be performed. It's likely that your vet will need to take samples from this area to be evaluated under the microscope. Once the cause of this issue is diagnosed, then your vet will be able to determine the best course of treatment. This is certainly not an emergency, so if many of your local vets are currently closed or have less availability, it's not a big deal if you need to wait a few extra weeks. Hello and thank you for your questions about Jonesy. It's difficult to know if this is normal or not without being able to examine him. Some dogs do have a protrusion above the urethral opening on their penis and it's often lighter colored than the rest of the tissue. This is normal. However, if you are noticing him licking more than normal, this often indicates discomfort. Young male dogs, especially if they are not neutered, often get infections in the prepuce and this can cause excessive licking and often an increase in discharge. Male dogs can also get bladder infections which can also cause increased licking. Since Jonesy cannot talk and tell you why this is happening, I recommend to have him examined this week.
