What is this soft bump near my Yorkie's tail? Hernia or emergency?

It has the appearance of a sebaceous cyst or mass, however without a physical exam this cannot be confirmed. Monitor for rapid change or growth, discharge or discomfort associated with the lump. As a hernia is a possibility and he is uncomfortable, he needs to be seen by a veterinarian tonight on an emergent basis to assess and address the source of discomfort. If it is a hernia, intestines can get trapped in it and effectively cause an obstruction which would need immediate surgery to minimize risk of the intestines losing blood flow and dying off. Even if it is not a hernia, his discomfort alone is concerning enough to have him seen to help him be more comfortable. Usually, x-rays and/or ultrasound are needed to assess things like this, then further diagnostics and a treatment plan can be made. I hope this helps and that Brodie gets better soon!

Hi Dhyanna! At such a young age, it's not likely Muffin has a malignant tumor; even if it was one, you would have seen symptoms of malignancy by now. It could be a benign tumor that is slowly growing. The only way to know for sure is to have Muffin seen by a vet for this. The vet can diagnose what is causing this lump and how best to treat it. I would take her into the vet in the next couple of days.

Hello. From the photo that you provided, this looks like a growth that may be benign or malignant. It may also be a cyst. Your veterinarian can try to do a fine needle aspirate on the lump in order to determine if it is urgent to surgically remove it. As to whether the hot spot caused it…. that is not likely. Your pet may be licking or chewing at it and it may have had some part in causing the hotspot, but I cannot say for sure. I would be worried about an injury as the area is very bruised and the lump is possibly a herniation.
