My dog has a blocked, runny nose and heavy breathing. Should I be concerned?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 8 months old

I noticed that my dog nose looked blocked on one side he has a runny nose on both sides when he has his mouth closed he breathing heavy. I put a little pressure around his nose and it didn't seem to hurt him. Should I be concerned?

Your dog may be suffering from severe allergies affecting his upper airways, or an upper respiratory infection caused by bacteria, a virus or a fungus. I strongly recommend you make an appointment with your veterinarian for an exam and appropriate treatment.

If he is stil breathing rapidly and acting abnormal than he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. He could have an infection and your vet can take an x-ray to evaluate his heart and lungs and then prescribe medication to treat. He might need an antibiotic or other medications, depending on the diagnosis.

Your pet needs to be seen by your vet right away. Any difficulty breathing should be treated as an emergency. Your pet could be having an allergic reaction, is in pain for some reason, anxious, could have fluid in or around the lungs due to a heart condition, there are a number of possibilities. Your vet will do an exam, bloodwork and x-rays to determine the cause for the symptoms and get your pet started on treatment.

My dog is congested. How can I help him breathe through his nose?

Oh no, poor Buddy! This could be caused by an upper respiratory infection, fungal infection, foreign body, or a nasal tumor if he is an older dog. You can try putting him in a room with a humidifier, or brining him into the bathroom with you when you take a shower. The steam from these may help temporarily relieve any congestion he is experiencing. I would have Buddy seen by a vet in the morning . The vet can diagnose what is causing his difficulty with breathing through his nose, and can discuss treatment options with you.

I am sorry to hear about Muis. She needs to have an exam at her vet to determine what is causing the blockage. There can be a variety of causes ranging from infections with bacteria or fungus, an infection of a tooth root causing swelling or abscess into nasal passages, a nasal polyp, or a tumor. These would all be treated differently. In the meantime you can try steam treatments placing her in the bathroom while you run a steamy shower for 10-15 minutes, which may help if this is congestion due to mucus buildup.

Puppy has runny nose and sounds congested. Should I see a vet?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! That is not likely to help much if at all due to the long nose of a dog. This is likely an upper respiratory infection. This is usually treated with antibiotics. I recommend that you have your pup evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. What causes a dog's runny nose, swollen nostrils, and loud breathing?

Hello, thank you for your question about Blue. Based on the symptoms that you describe it is possible that his nasal discharge and loud breathing could be an indication of any of the above mentioned problems. Dogs can develop upper respiratory infections secondary to bacteria or viruses. Another possible explanation is that Blue has rhinitis, or an inflammatory condition, most commonly associated with allergies. These symptoms can also be indicative of a nasal foreign body or possibly a nasal mass. There are "nasal mites" (or parasites) that can cause these symptoms, but these are very uncommon. I would recommend having Blue evaluated by your veterinarian so that they can perform an examination and evaluate his lungs and nose. Depending on these findings they can discuss the need for additional diagnostics and discuss possible treatment options. Hope this helps, good luck!
