My dog snapped at a puppy. Is this aggression or just boundaries?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Our three year old retriever snapped at my brothers lab puppy that he brought over. The puppy sort of crawled up on the retriever and the retriever snapped. It scared the puppy, but no blood or marks. I’m wondering if this behavior is legitimate cause for concern, or if the retriever is setting his personal boundaries in a safe way, albeit tough and “animal-like.”

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question. I think your dog is setting boundaries but I'd keep a close on them when they are together. Never leave them alone to be safe. I hope this helps.
