My dog smells bad and sleeps more. Is it yeast or just old age?

If you are observing skin lesions and an odor he may have both a bacterial and yeast infection. While some cases can be treated topically and with medicated shampoos, more severe cases often requires oral antibiotic and antifungal therapy. As a first line therapy, start with a medicated shampoo that can be used for both yeast and bacterial infections such as Malaseb or Virbac or products recommended by your veterinarian. Additionally, it is important to make sure he is on a monthly flea prevention as many pets are sensitive to fleas. If this is secondary to allergies or what we refer to as atopy, he may require additional therapy including an allergy vaccine.

Grundy could be licking himself due to fleas, an infection or anal gland issues. The bad smell could come from a skin infection or anal gland issues. Since his skin is nearly raw and he has an odor, it's best to have him examined by the veterinarian. The doctor may be able to correctly diagnose and treat him based upon the physical exam. Different odors have different causes. A foul odor may indicate a bacterial infection. A yeast infection sometimes smells like Fritos. A fruity smell can indicate ketones created by diabetes. Dental disease also has a strong smell. Anal gland "juice" smells fishy. If you can't figure out where the odor is coming from, I would have Muffin examined by the vet.

Unfortunately there is no home cure. You will need to take your dog to a veterinarian for an exam, diagnosis and, if it is a yeast infection, prescription antifungal medicine and possibly shampoo. Besides a yeast dermatitis, this could also be a bacterial infection or sarcoptes mites. This is why diagnosis is important.

I agree, it does sound like Amos could have a yeast infection. He may have allergies causing him to do the scratching, which in turn has broken the skin leading to a yeast infection. I'd have him seen by a vet for this problem. The vet can diagnose what is causing it and can treat him. If possible, I'd take him into a vet today. He's a cutie!

Oh my. Poor Chillidog. This appears to be a really bad bacterial infection and not a yeast infection in my professional opinion. Perhaps even a Staphylococcus infection. You should request from your vet to have a culture done of the skin so that you know what antibiotic will resolve this. And because if your pets age, a look at underlying causes is highly recommmended if there was no trauma to he skin hat may have caused this. The infection appears deep so I actually would not recommend continuing the topical antibiotic if this were my patient. Oral antibiotics are a must! I also would recommend an Elizabethan collar to prevent any licking or chewing, which will only make this worse. I really hope you can get a handle on Chillidogs skin infection quickly. It could be Precious has a skin infection caused by yeast leading to that smell. The only way to know for sure is to have her seen by a vet. The vet can diagnose the cause of the smell, and can treat her for it. Since the smell is so bad, I'd take her into a vet today or tomorrow. Best of luck.
