My dog is sleepy, eyes closed, whimpering, and has a runny nose. Vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 9 months and 12 days old | 30 lbs

My question is .... my dogs behavior has been weird for about 24 hrs. We were out side about a day and half ago and it was very warm about 89 degrees. When we came back in the house that even she was fine but the next day she could not keep her eyes open. And she is having moments where she is turning her head back towards her but and she will start whimpering. She also has a really runny nose. But she is eating a drinking water. But alms she wants to do is sleep. should I take her to the vet?

It does sound like Harley is feeling sick, and this lethargy could be caused by a systemic illness, infection, inflammation, or injury. The runny nose could be due to a respiratory infection or allergies, while her looking at her behind could be due to impacted anal sacs, pain, or intestinal worms. I do think it would be a good idea to have her seen by a vet tomorrow, and I don't feel you need to rush to the the vet tonight if she is eating and drinking. But definitely have her seen by a vet in the morning for a health check if she is still acting this way tomorrow.

Your pet needs to be seen by a vet right away. Even with no other symptoms, extreme lethargy is very concerning. Your dog may have eaten something that disagreed with her, swallowed something that has caused an obstruction, has parasites, is coming down with some kind of infection, there are a number of possibilities. Your vet will do an exam and labwork to determine the cause of your pets symptoms and give you some treatment options based on those results.

It could be. As long as she continues to eat well and behave otherwise normally, I would keep an eye on her for a day or two. If she continues to be lethargic and congested beyond the next couple of days or her symptoms worsen, I would get her seen by your vet as soon as possible. If she is unvaccinated yet, there is the possibility that she was exposed to distemper or another virus.

My dog is lethargic, unresponsive, and can't walk. What's wrong?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Harley! Look closely at Harley's eyes...are they moving quickly side to side or rolling? If they are then he could be having a vestibular event. The most common cause is a middle ear infection (under the ear drum) that causes inflammation of the peripheral nerve that control balance. Other causes could be more serious: stroke, seizure, brain tumor, metabolic issues or bleeding that is causing weakness. Harley should see your Vet ASAP this morning for an exam. Why is my puppy warm, has a runny nose, and acting lethargic?

It's possible that Marley has a fever, especially if he seems lethargic and/or has a decrease in appetite. Some dos will seem warm (especially puppies) even when their temperature is normal however. I usually don't get too concerned about nasal discharge as long as it is clear, but if his runny nose is green or yellow then it could be a sign of an upper respiratory infection. If you're concerned it would be a good idea to see your vet for a physical exam.

Why is my dog drooling, losing balance, and acting lethargic?

Poor Harley. It could be he is nauseous or has a dental problem causing the drooling. If he has a dental problem, it could extend into his sinuses, leading to the balance problems. But the balance problems could be caused by something else like an ear infection. I think he definitely needs to see a vet, and I would take him into one first thing in the morning. Best of luck.
