Why is my dog sleeping so deeply and hard to wake up? Is he okay?

Dogs approaching Murphy's age frequently experience hearing loss, so it could be that saying his name isn't enough to wake him anymore, because he just doesn't hear it while he's sleeping. I do think that older pets are more difficult to rouse as well, however if Murphy hasn't seen his vet for a thorough checkup recently, this is something I'd schedule, and definitely mention at the visit. Your vet can do some simple hearing and mentation tests that should tell you more.

Puppies do tend to sleep very deeply and they do dream more than adult dogs. I recommend to record one of these episodes. Also the description of events suggest she was having very vivid dreams and the eye twitching is normal when a pet is asleep. This is an indication of REM sleep. However if you still are concerned about Precious, then there are no issues with taking her in to your vet for a standard physical exam to ensure she is in healthy condition.

She could have been so deeply asleep she might not have noticed you picking her up. She is an older dog and possibly starting to be hard of hearing as well. If she woke up shortly after and is behaving normally, I would not worry too much. If she had a problem waking up, then you should have her seen by a veterinarian.

It is normal for dogs to go someone limp and have rapid eye movement while in deep sleep, just like with people. In some cases, you may see your dog whimper or even twitch their limbs if they are dreaming or deep in REM.
