Why is my dog sleeping constantly after skin fungal medicine?

I'm sorry to hear about Popcorn! It would be helpful to know when he went to the vet and what injections were given. His original symptoms could indicate an allergy, and if you were at the vet recently it's possible that one of the injections could cause drowsiness as a normal side effect, if an antihistamine such as diphenhydramine was given in addition to the Cetirizine (which is an antihistamine). In that case I wouldn't be as worried. If you're still giving Cetirizine, I would recommend discontinuing and seeing if he perks up in the next 24 hours - if so, the drowsiness may have been a side effect of the medication. However, if the lethargy continues even off meds (or if he is not currently on any meds and the vet visit was more than 24 hours ago) and he's still acting lethargic, I would encourage you to take him back to the vet, as lethargy could indicate that his original rash is getting worse and he needs a change in his treatment. Hello! Those lesions could be caused by an infection like bacteria or even fungus as well as allergies. Usually though mild infections and allergies don't cause dogs to be depressed/act abnormally. If his behavior continues, he has any vomiting, or his food/water intake goes down further I recommend having your veterinarian do an exam as those changes could be caused by something more serious, like liver issues, anemia, an infection or even cancer.

The only instance where that medication could result in such side effects is if for example it is causing like gastrointestinal ulceration and anemia. In that case you may notice black tarry stools and his gums may look pale. If that is the case, I recommend that you have him evaluated as soon as possible as that may represent a medical emergency. Otherwise, severe lethargy can be observed with a variety of conditions going from anemia to pain/discomfort. I recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian soon as that degree of lethargy is not expected from that medication and is likely something else going on. Good luck!

Great question! Unfortunately, I don't have a great answer. If your dog is eating and drinking normally and the issues that necessitated her hospitalization have resolved, I would be far less concerned. Until she has completed the courses of medication, it is ultimately impossible to determine if her lethargy is secondary to medication or due to illness. Consider calling your vet to discuss if any of the medications can be discontinued or if any doses can be reduced to limit potential lethargy. I hope that all goes well!

Depending on the extent of flea infestation, lethargy is not at all uncommon. Flea bites can drain a significant amount of blood and nutrients from the body, so when a severe attack as occurred, what you are describing is very much expected. If the exposure was not significant, it is possible that Milo may just be having a reaction to the medication itself. If this is the case, he should come out of it relatively soon. He should start feeling much better after about 3 days on the ear medications - if he's not perking up I would recommend giving your vet a call to see if they want him to come back in. She may be lethargic due to pain. I suggest you call your vet to see if you can get a different pain medication. I have eye problems and I can tell you it is miserable and very painful and you don't feel like doing much. I'm guessing that may be going on with her. I'm glad the eye is looking better though!
