My dog has a skin tag on its lip. Do they grow? Is this a common spot?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 5 years and 5 months old | 53.5 lbs

So about 2 months ago we noticed this skin tag on my dog’s lip (vet has seen it & says skin tag). My question, do you agree? Do skin tags grow at all (slowly... slightly... or no? What should I expect?) is the lip a commonplace to see them? Thanks

I agree that it looks like a skin tag. Around the mouth is a common place to see them, and they usually do grow a little bit, but not usually very much. I think it is most likely a benign skin tag but the only way to know for sure would be to remove it and send it out for biopsy. If it changes dramatically then I would recommend this. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would agree with your veterinarian. This is most likely a skin tag. I think it would be ok to monitor for now and have it removed if at any point it appears to be growing. If it is a skin tag it is not expected to grow much. Good luck and have a great day!

I would only consider further workup if the lump grows significantly in a short period of time, if it changes shape or texture, or if Timmy starts bothering at it (scratching, licking). At that point, a fine needle aspirate can be done to confirm the nature of the lump, and decide whether surgery is necessary to remove it. I hope this helps, and that Timmy is happy and healthy!

My dog's skin tag grew quickly and is now huge. Is it a tumor?

Yes, it is a tumour. I would have it rechecked and have it sampled to see what kind of tumour it is. All skin lumps are tumours, but some are completely harmless, some can spread locally, others can spread to different parts of the body. A small test, such as a fine needle aspirate, might give you more of an idea. Good luck !

My pit bull has a growing skin tag. What causes dog skin growths?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor guy! Without seeing a picture it is hard to know if it is a skin tag or not. Since he is young it could be a histiocytoma, which are pink hairless button like growths on the skin. They are benign and tend to regress in 2-3 months. Skin tag are also benign. It is likely genetics and chronic trauma/pressure that cause them to form, as most skin tags are on the underside and legs where dogs lay on. They are normal in some dogs like boxers, pit bull and pit mixes, great danes. If you want to post a picture I'd be happy to look at it. Have a great day!

Hello. You are correct, this is a skin tag, but a bit bigger than a tag. At this point, you have a pedunculated mass. About 99% of these are totally benign, but we do recommend removal just because they can continue to grow & become traumatized. Removal is curative.
