Yes, you can definitely give the oral antibiotics and apply the dermalone ointment at the same time. I would apply the ointment 2-3 times a day for at least the next 7 days and finish the entire course of antibiotic (give with food). Something else that can help is bathing every 2-3 days for 2 weeks with a medicated antibacterial shampoo such as Malaseb (available on chewy.com and petco.com), although your vet probably has a similar medicated shampoo that you can pick up from their office today leave the suds on for 5-10 min prior to rinse to allow the medicated shampoo bto have the greatest effect. Purchasing a probiotic from your vet as well can help prevent diarrhea from the cephalexin. Good luck!

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

I'm sorry to hear Abe is having skin issues. I would be concerned by the progression of his skin that he may have something more going on in addition to the bacterial infection, such as allergies, a skin parasites (mites or fleas) or a fungal infection. Ideally, he should be physically examined by your veterinarian since he has had the condition for so long and it has resisted conservative treatment. Systemic antibiotics or anti-fungals along with an appropriate topical treatment may be indicated.

In most cases these skin infections, called bacterial pyoderma, are allergy-related. The antibiotics will help, but as you've experienced the skin problems will come back if the primary allergic disease isn't controlled. The hydroxyzine Becher took was an antihistamine, and that may have helped control the itchiness, however it sounds to me that he needs something a bit stronger to control the allergies and thus the skin infections. Talk to your vet about using Apoquel or Atopica on him; these are great drugs with minimal side effects that really help allergic dogs.

Hi there. I'm so sorry to hear about Echo's troubles. In some cases, a lesion like that on the nose can just be from coming in contact with an irritant that could've just bothered the skin there. The irritant could've caused Echo to rub her nose on a surface and cause that lesion to appear. A staph infection can also develop around the area. Other things I look into if the lesion doesn't go away, starts to spread, or gets worse, are autoimmune diseases of the skin. I would advise just spot cleaning the area with some mild soap and water, like dial gold hand soap twice per day for a few days or some vetericyn wound spray. Creams or lotions will likely just be licked off, so I'd avoid using those. If it's not getting better in 3-5 days, I'd have Echo examined by her veterinarian to insure she doesn't need any diagonstic skin tests, or prescription medications to help the lesion resolve. Sometimes chronically irritated skin can become hyperpigmented and become darker in color, which could be a sign that his skin is healing. This is usually not related to antibiotics and as long as he seems comfortable I would recommend finishing the course of cephalexin. It also might be a good idea to contact your veterinarian and make sure there are no other specific concerns for Audi's particular case.
